Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Student Leadership Development Coordinator position. The Student Leadership Development Coordinator is a full-time, three-year term position, starting at $62,776 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Student Leadership Development Coordinator is responsible for the planning and implementing student leadership programs emanating from Student Engagement and Leadership, reporting to the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership. The Student Leadership Development Coordinator will execute programming that supports student leadership development, including, but not limited to, involvement fairs, on-campus leadership sessions, leadership retreats, organization orientation, and building an annual leadership celebration. The position specifically supports the development and implementation of student leadership initiatives, including the development and implementation of a leadership certificate and badge program.

Through these programs, students will learn to be strong team-members as well as strong leaders and will have opportunities to practice, make mistakes, and discover their own style of leadership. With the goal of ensuring every Amherst student will have at least two exposures to a foundational level of leadership training before they graduate, ultimately, they will graduate knowing how to leave a positive legacy on campus and how to build on it as they move through the world.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Student Leadership Programming
  • Partner with the Director and Associate Directors of Student Engagement and Leadership to create a comprehensive leadership development model available to all students through a series of well-scaffolded initiatives
  • Design and implement a multi-day leadership certificate program during the January break and continue through the semester, with a focus on establishing community, cultivating confidence, and connecting to resources
  • Develop components of a leadership program which will weave in the values and priorities of Amherst's division of Student Affairs through skill-building in areas such as empathy, emotional intelligence, dialoguing across and within difference, self-awareness, deliberation, decision-making, and public speaking
  • Create a dynamic and robust schedule of leadership opportunities including workshops, events and trainings open to all students
  • Coordinate leadership efforts across campus, providing students with competency based opportunities for leadership development, including a series of leadership workshops in collaboration with the Loeb Center for Career Exploration, Book and Plow Farm, Athletics, etc.
  • Work with Amherst town community partners to support and connect student leadership and civic engagement
  • Conduct assessment on leadership development needs for students across campus
  • Work with campus partners to create a more collaborative and organized approach to the student leadership experience


Registered Student Organizations (RSO) Support
  • Develop, plan and implement a required leadership training program for RSO Leaders
  • Create workshops which can be facilitated for RSOs who request trainings


Orientation Leadership Programming
  • Develop and implement leadership programming to support the first year and transfer orientation experience
  • Provide leadership and support in training approximately 80 orientation leaders


Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience with project management, strategic planning or community organizing
  • Experience with or commitment to working with a diverse community
  • Experience with conducting needs assessments
  • Skilled at data collection, data management, and analysis
  • Ability to manage time
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with website creation and facility with social media
  • An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check
  • Knowledge of MS Office, specifically Excel (data manipulation, pivot tables)


Preferred
  • Master's Degree: Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Public Health or related field
  • Experience working at an institution of higher education
