Position Overview

Success by Design is an academic unit within University College at Arizona State University. Success by Design invites applications for a faculty position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor focused on transformative teaching and learning, research, and service. We seek an innovative and dynamic educator committed to our mission of empowering learners through a diverse range of courses and support systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to student-centered pedagogical practices, inquiry-based learning, demonstrated leadership, and the development of courses that foster skill development and well-being.

University College’s goal is to disrupt the 20th-century model of higher education by:

  1. Designing personalized learning experiences to end achievement disparities for students of all backgrounds.
  2. Designing for an integrated work and learning future.
  3. Designing services to support learners at scale by using design thinking, analytics, automation, and intelligent systems.
  4. University College is guided by 5 key design principles: learners first, be bold, simplify, personalize, and collaborate. A wide range of new programs and services are currently under development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver courses that empower students to apply critical thinking and solve problems confidently, focusing on first-year students and those on academic warning and probation.
  • Lead and participate in comprehensive faculty development programs to enhance student-centered teaching practices and growth.
  • Utilize analytics to support the retention of at-risk student groups and contribute to the LEAD program by providing the support necessary for student success.
  • Engage in research and service activities that align with University College design goals and principles to support learners at scale and help lead a team of peers in this work.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages exploration, innovation, and reflection among students.
  • Support developing and implementing strategic initiatives within University College and Success by Design.

The Success by Design leadership team will determine course load; however, up to 20% of ATP’s load will be designated to service, including curriculum development, research, committee work, faculty professional development, and other service to the unit, college, or university. An additional 10% of ATP load may be utilized for service to address the unit's needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in education or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching and learning methodologies, with a strong record of facilitating student success.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly underrepresented students.
  • Expertise in curriculum development. 
  • Experience with designing and implementing interactive and inquiry-based learning experiences.
  • Comfort with embracing change and engaging in continuous professional development.
  • Proven ability to innovate in the field of education and conduct research that contributes to the body of knowledge of effective pedagogical practices.
  • Commitment to service that supports the university charter and aligns with the Success by Design unit and University College goals and design principles.
  • Five years of teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with analytics and automation tools to support student retention and success.
  • Record of collaborative projects demonstrating the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Experience teaching both online and immersion (in-person) courses.
  • Experience working with first-year college students.
  • Two years of teaching experience at a post-secondary institution.

The successful candidate should have excellent facilitation skills, strong curriculum development skills, and be passionate about working with college learners. These courses feature facilitated activities and experiences rather than a lecture-based approach; an interactive pedagogical approach is required.  This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit and university. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Candidate must reside in Arizona or be willing to relocate.
