Job Summary/Scope
The Director of Tissue Recovery (DoTR) is responsible for planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of operations for the Tissue Recovery services. The DoTR is responsibility for developing and maintaining standard operating procedures related to the recovery of tissues for transplant, research donation, as well as maintaining responsibility for evaluating and analyzing departmental operational plans, monitoring, and maintaining financial performance indicators and ensuring administrative/operational opportunities to effectively grow the organization. The DoTR is responsible for administrative direction and leadership activities that relate to tissue services as well as special projects. The DoTR is responsible for oversight of all hands-on tissue operational aspects of tissue operations, recruitment, development, and retention of all Tissue Recovery staff.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the oversight of Tissue Recovery staff.
- Communicates job expectations, planning, monitoring, coaching, counseling and appraising job results.
- Monitors and approves staff time records and overtime requests.
- Monitors and approves overtime and ensures cost is within designated budget.
- Develops training and continuing education opportunities (includes SIM Lab training, regular meetings, and identifying appropriate conferences/workshops to attend).
- Provides real time supervision and direction to Manager of Tissue Recovery and Tissue Recovery Coordinators as needed for potential
- Provides on-going reviews and debriefings of cases (referral, eligibility, and tissue recovery).
- Assists Manager in maintaining and interpreting monthly data related to donation
- Based on data collected, identifies areas where training needs to focus and designs training methods in order to increase performance of tissue recovery.
- Follows and enforces systems including Standard Operating Procedures.
- Works in collaboration with the Medical Director to continually review and enhance clinical evaluation, donor management, tissue recovery practices for the purpose of identifying and resolving clinical process and performance issues and with the goal of maximizing tissue donation.
- Responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive plan for tissue recovery to maximize donation opportunities in the ARORA donation service area.
- Obtains outcomes consistent with the minimum performance standards required by FDA and AATB.
- Knowledgeable of all areas of the donation process, the RAAGA, regulations regarding authorization, and maintains confidentiality of all patient specific information.
- Ensures policy development and revisions as needed according to ARORA standards, state/federal regulations, accreditation agencies, and recovery partner guidelines.
- Responsible for outlining budget with the Director of Finance and the CEO for tissue operations for the fiscal year.
- Responsible for data reporting to regulatory agencies as required.
- Works in collaboration with the Director of Quality Systems regarding recovery related audits.
- Assist with onsite audits and audit responses, as appropriate.
- Works in collaboration with Manager of Tissue Recovery to build and maintain ARORA’s relationships with tissue partners to address issues and develop strategies to maximize tissue donation in ARORA’s designated service area.
- Collects and presents monthly, quarterly, and annual tissue data at the request of the CEO.
- Promotes and maintains an organizational culture which values the decisions and gifts from donors and their families.
- Ability to practice with a high degree of autonomy in a self-directed manner, utilizing creative and critical thinking skills to problem solve and develop solutions.
- Works in collaboration with the Director of Organ Recovery regarding administrative maintenance of Electronic Donor Record.
Secondary Functions
- Responsible for oversight of relationships with affiliated agencies, i.e., Arkansas Lions Eye Bank and Laboratory and MTFBiologics.
- Participates in backup call schedule as staff necessitates.
Management Essential Functions
- Member of Directors Group participating in the development and implementation of organizational and strategic goals.
- Member of Leadership Team participating in the development of tactics to implement the strategic goals.
- Ensures implementation of strategic goals as they relate to the department.
- Responsible for preparing and monitoring departmental budget.
- Collaborates with Director of Finance regarding departmental fiscal responsibility.
- Ensures staff documentation completion and accuracy.
- Responsible for oversight, compliance, and monitoring of contractual agreements under area of responsibility.
- Authorized to negotiate contractual terms and request competitive quotes in accordance with financial policies on behalf of the organization.
- Develops, tracks, and reports Key Performance Indicators (KPI), departmental Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) goals and monthly statistics utilizing techniques to test improvement efforts.
- Presents CQI departmental goals to CQI committee.
- Promotion of staff engagement including wellness initiatives.
- Presents departmental reports to Director’s Group, Leadership Team, and/or Board of Directors, as required.
- Expected to serve as spokesperson at public events as it relates to your area of responsibility.
- Collaborates with the Quality Systems Department to ensure policies and practices follow Standard Operating Procedures and are in compliance with accreditation, certification and regulatory agencies.
- Responsible for writing, revising, editing and proofreading job descriptions, SOPs, and related departmental documents.
- Responsible for cooperative management with other managers at ARORA to ensure that tasks and responsibilities of direct reports are completed timely and efficiently.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, orientation, counseling, discipline, and separation of direct report(s).
- Conducts annual evaluations, monitors professional development and annual competencies for direct report(s).
- With the approval of CEO serves on national committees.

- With the approval of division Director, serves on national committees.

- Risk Exposure to Blood/Body Fluids: While performing some essential functions of your position, you may be exposed to blood or body fluids. Established procedures identify the appropriate personal protective measures that you should use when performing essential functions of your position. - Repetitive Motion: While performing some essential functions of your position, you may be required to perform some functions repeatedly. When such tasks are not performed properly, injury can result.
- Minimum Weightlifting Requirement: While performing some essential functions of your position, you may be required to do some lifting, moving, pushing, or pulling. When such tasks are not performed properly, injury can result. Must have the ability to lift minimum weight of 50lbs.
- Prolonged Sitting, Standing, and Bending: While performing some essential functions of your position, you may be required to sit, stand, or bend for an extended period of time. - Competency Evaluation: Competency evaluations are required for this position. Your supervisor will notify you when your evaluation is to be conducted.

Work Environment
- Works in various locations, including normal office environment, operating room, hospital environment, and other locations as essential and secondary functions necessitates.
- Required to carry a cellular telephone for business purposes.
- Occasional travel required by personal vehicle to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- May require travel by commercial or chartered aircraft.

Work Hours
Forty-hour workweek with occasional weekends, holidays, or evenings.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, or other health related field preferred, or minimum five (5) years tissue recovery experience.
- At least 3 years recovery/transplant experience required and 4 years management experience.
- CTBS Certified preferred or obtained within 1 year.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, reliable automobile, and proof of automobile insurance.
- Minimum 5 years proficiency in sterile technique or other experience deemed equivalent.
- Must maintain required vaccination and/or health screenings to minimize the potential for disease transmission.
- Consistent demonstration of attention to detail, precision, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
- Possess strong prioritization skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks.
- Excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills (i.e. has the ability to make decisions based on situational circumstance, company policy and customer relations).
- Ability to utilize general office equipment, software, and must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
