Overview

California State University, Fresno's Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Theatre, Acting and Directing. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Acting Emphasis, advise students, supervise student's creative activities, facilitate community outreach and direct plays for the University Theatre's Mainstage season.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to acting coaching, voice coaching and or movement coaching. The person in this position is expected to advise and coach actors for professional auditions, graduate school, and acting internships. They may direct classical theater, musical theater, or contemporary plays for the University Theatre. Other courses in the Acting Emphasis include Voice and Speech for Performance, Stage Dialects, Musical Theatre and Movement for Actors. Demonstrated ability to teach several of these courses is preferred. General Education can also be a part of the teaching load. Recruiting and retaining students in the department is part of the position's responsibilities.

We seek an individual who is enthusiastic about working cooperatively with faculty and staff in the Department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Arts and Humanities. Collaboration and collegiality are an important part of the culture of the department. Faculty typically teach 12 WTUs (4 courses) per semester. During the first two years of appointment, new faculty teach 9 WTUs (3 courses) to support scholarly and/or creative activities. In summary, the successful candidate will teach and develop courses in the Acting emphasis, conduct creative activity; serve on department, college, and university committees; engage in community service; and actively participate in Theatre and Dance activities and programming.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
  1. An earned terminal degree MFA or doctorate (Ph.D.) in Theatre or another closely related discipline.
  2. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (August 1, 2024).

Required Experience:
  1. Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching at the undergraduate level or equivalent professional experience in acting and/or directing.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with people from a diverse ethnic, cultural, gender, ability, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Experience:
  1. Demonstrated record of success in Classical Theatre, including Shakespeare.
  2. Demonstrated record of success in Voice and Speech for Performance.
  3. Professional experience that can help connect our students to the industry, professional theaters, and grad school programs.
  4. Additional experience in one or more of the following areas: Acting techniques, Musical Theatre, Movement and/or Vocal techniques, Physical Theatre or Stage Combat.
