Description:

Under the general direction of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, performs semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City.

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, carries out and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
  • Cuts and welds metal and performs repairs or fabricates attachments to vehicles.
  • Changes and repairs tires and tubes
  • Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
  • Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
  • Purchase equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • May assist in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains repair and maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and at least three (3) years of related work experience is also required. Some experience in refuse truck service and repair is preferred. Or any equivalent combination of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license with CDL Class A and tanker endorsement.  Must be able to maintain continuing eligibility under the City’s driver eligibility standards.  ASE automotive and/or heavy truck certification is highly desirable.  In addition, completion and certification from a manufacturer-sponsored education and training source, as in a dealership-level training program, is also desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be a non-smoker and non-tobacco/nicotine user, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff, etc. and refrain from using all tobacco/nicotine products for the duration of employment with the City.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 

Knowledge and application of current diagnostic and repair technology used in modern automotive and truck service and repairs; considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, emission systems, transmissions, powertrains, hydraulic controls and valves, generators and other non-road use equipment, computerized electrical systems, and maintenance welding repairs on various types of equipment. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

Skill in operation of common repair shop tools and equipment including tire changing, grinding, cleaning using abrasive cabinet gear, vehicle lifts, air powered tools, power washer and bulk fill lube / fluid dispensing system. Skill in performing welding tasks and electrical system diagnosis and repairs. Advanced diagnostic skill using hand held scanner and similar diagnostic tools and platforms.

Ability to maintain effective preventative maintenance programs; ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; ability to adapt and safely use available tools and parts to accomplish necessary repairs and to evaluate circumstances and make decisions; ability to maintain clean work area; ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, vendors and the public.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic’s tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; welding tools; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, phone; mobile or portable radio.
