The City of Eugene is hiring a Librarian 1 to join the Eugene Public Library Bethel Branch Team!
Eugene Public Library is seeking a dedicated public service professional with a passion for connecting with the community and being a champion of early literacy. The Bethel Branch library is located in an area designated as a Promise Neighborhood, where the majority of children entering kindergarten do not have the early literacy skills they are predicted to need for school success. With this as a priority, we’re looking for someone with the drive to support children, families, and educators and the ability to collaborate with community partners.
This librarian position supports lifelong learning by providing reference, reader’s advisory, collection development, and programming for all ages. They will provide direct service to patrons at a single service desk, where staff get to know many of our regular visitors and can see the difference their efforts make in creating a welcoming and supportive space for the Bethel community.

Must reside in the state of Oregon and be able to report onsite for work as needed in Eugene, OR to meet business needs.
Schedule: Full-time, Flexibility per business need. Must be available to work anytime during the schedule hours. May be required to work at multiple library locations per business need.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services. May assign work and monitor assignments of library assistants and volunteers.
- Uses a wide variety of databases and online content providers such as Hoopla and Overdrive and is comfortable working with LibGuides. All Librarians are required to offer patrons a basic level of technical support for library computers, laptops, and equipment.
- Follows City's Affirmative Action and diversity work plans; centers diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work.
- Tracks and maintains budget for programs and collections in assigned areas.
- Presents public programs and activities for all ages such as: author or cultural presentations; book clubs; craft classes; technology learning sessions; storytime; and tours of the library.
- Trains patrons in the use of library databases, search strategies, and the library’s computer software.
- Provides reader's advisory to patrons.
- Researches and responds to basic, difficult, or technical reference questions.
- Provides patron-first service to all community members, bringing empathy and a proactive equity lens to every interaction.
- Manages a portion of the collection. Meets circulation as well as equity and diversity goals, maintaining a diverse and popular collection. Reads review publications and materials to assist in selecting and evaluating materials for acquisition. Analyzes and deselects materials as needed.
- May partner with other community agencies to support the library's mission and represent the Library at professional meetings as well as serve on a variety of City committees, commissions, and task forces.
- Maintains a safe and welcoming environment for all members of our community.
- While performing in-charge-of-building duties, complies with and enforces safety policies and the library’s Patron Code of Conduct procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job. Minimum Requirements: Combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum qualifications will be considered.
Education: Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
Experience: Some library experience is highly desirable.
Preferred Experience: Early literature experience or training. Fluency in Spanish. Fluency in a language in addition to English is desirable. Preference for relevant bilingual ability may be given.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Selection Process: Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be notified within two-three weeks after the posting deadline.
Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Marijuana use is evaluated consistent with current state law regulations.
What You Can Expect from Our Application Process:

- Your application is reviewed by a person for relatable skills and experience that can but used to meet the minimum requirements of the role.
- Your application supplemental question answers are reviewed by at least two reviewers to make sure that distinct lenses are used to see your perspective and unique characteristics. Take your time on your answers, they are really important!
- Interview invites are extended. (There can be more than one round of interviews.) We use panel interviews where all interviewees are asked the exact same questions to provide the same opportunity to each candidate.
- Finalists are discovered, and references and backgrounds are checked.
- Pay equity reviews are performed to avoid any pay gaps or inequities.
- Offers are made.
Once the posting closes, the process can take 4-6 weeks to complete.

Bilingual Pay Benefit: This benefit compensates non-represented employees up to 5% of their base salary. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must demonstrate fluency in an eligible language and pass a language proficiency test that is administrated by the City’s Employee Resource Center division.
Eligibility List: This posting may also be used to establish an eligibility list of applicants for future vacancies. Candidates that are placed on the eligibility list will be notified via email which will include the duration of the list and how notification of call up will occur.
Retirement Program: Upon eligibility, the City will contribute an employee contribution of 6%, as well as the employer contribution, to a retirement program administered by the Oregon Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). In addition, the City will pay a 3% contribution to a deferred compensation program if the employee contributes at least 1%.
