GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Assistant City Attorney is responsible for performing professional legal work on behalf of the City, its officials, and its employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts criminal, civil, and administrative litigation, on behalf of the City and its officials/employees, before local, state, and federal courts/agencies, including engaging in discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeals.
  • Reviews and authorizes or denies criminal complaints and warrants (including on periodic weekends).
  • Reviews and/or drafts contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
  • Provides legal advice and training to City officials and employees.
  • Attends meetings of City boards and commissions as legal counsel.
  • Review, investigate, and process Freedom of Information Act requests, damage claims, and internal complaints.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with court personnel, other City officials and employees, opposing counsel, and the general public.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • License to practice law in the State of Michigan by date of appointment. Candidates who are licensed in other states and are eligible for reciprocity or are awaiting bar exam results are encouraged to apply.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver's License
  • Submission of a legal writing sample, preferably a brief, of which you are the primary author.
