FIRE CAPTAIN
This position is represented under the Firefighters' Association MOU and offers a comprehensive benefit package including: vacation, holiday pay and or leave option, life insurance, and 401A benefit with matching contribution (upon completion of probation). The City offers a sponsored health insurance plan (HDHP/HSA), with a City HSA contribution of: EO - $2,300/Year E+1 or Fam - $4,200/Year (pro-rated based on date of hire). Sponsored dental and vision insurance.
The City participates in CalPERS in lieu of Social Security; New Safety Fire members to CalPERS new PEPRA formula 2.7% @ 57, 3 year average; current Safety Fire members 3% @ 55. A voluntary 457 plan is also available.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction of assigned Fire Battalion Chief, the Fire Captain plans, directs and supervises the day-to-day activities of assigned engine company personnel; commands engine company emergency responses; and directs shift/station activities related to fire inspection/prevention, training and public education.

Positions at this level typically participate in the more complex functions of the work unit in addition to having direct supervisory responsibility.

Examples of Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
1. Plans, organizes, directs and controls work activities of personnel assigned to a given shift/station; supervises crews and companies placed in Fire Captain's charge.
2. Acts as incident commander at fire, rescue and emergency medical scenes in the absence of a Fire Battalion Chief or as necessary.
3. Supervises and directs monthly state and local engine company fire inspections on businesses within the City; enforces local codes.
4. Conducts pre-incident surveys of risks in the City, records required information and conducts follow-up as required.
5. Supervises and directs daily training exercises for engine company personnel.
6. Performs and directs engine company personnel in the maintenance of equipment/apparatus, station house, and all fire fighting and emergency equipment.
7. Prepares various reports and maintains records on engine company activities.
8. Performs regular employee performance reviews to achieve improved performance and morale.
9. Conducts and directs public education/public awareness programs.
10. Investigates fires for cause and origin.
11. May serve as acting Fire Battalion Chief in the latter's absence as assigned.
12. Orders and maintains supplies.
13. Supervises and directs engine company personnel on out of city, county or state incidents.
14. Performs related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and procedures of modern municipal fire prevention, inspection and suppression.
- Principles and practices of emergency medical procedures.
- Operation, maintenance and mechanics of fire fighting and rescue equipment.
- Laws, codes, ordinances and regulations effecting fire prevention and emergency rescue activities.
- Building construction, hazards, risks and profile of City relating to emergency management.
- Modern personnel management theory and practice.
- City street system, location of hydrants and emergency treatment facilities.
- Principles and practices of hydraulics and water flow capacity.
Ability to: - Assume command at fire and other emergency scenes as required.
- Perform intensive physical fire suppression and emergency rescue response activities.
- Supervise and evaluate the activities of fire station personnel on a day-to-day basis.
- Command an engine company effectively.
- Operate departmental computer equipment as necessary.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education/Training:
An Associate's degree (fire related field is highly desirable).
Experience:
Must be certified as an Acting Captain at the time of application.
Completed Engineer Probation, or a minimum of Five years increasingly responsible fire suppression, emergency medical response, and fire prevention experience as a full time paid Firefighter and/or Fire Engineer with 2 of those years in the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. Some lead supervisory responsibility is highly desirable.
- Prior experience as a career Fire Engineer or Fire Captain from another agency may be considered at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
License or Certificate:
Must possess and maintain a California Class C – Firefighters exempt license, or a Commercial Class A or B Driver's License, or a comparable driver's license issued by the State of Nevada.
Possession of CFSTES Driver/Operator 1A and 1B.
Possession of an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate.
