Job Summary:
The journeyman electrician will construct, maintain, and repair electrical systems common to college campuses. Systems include primary and secondary power, fire alarm, energy management, telephone/data, card access, lighting controls, power plant wiring, and increasingly complicated control systems. The journeyman electrician is responsible for answering and solving customer issues, work orders, and after hours calls. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Construct, maintain, and repair electrical systems as found in commercial and institutional buildings, residence halls, classrooms, and administrative buildings
  • Maintain and repair low voltage systems such as fire/security, energy management systems, card access systems, and fume hoods
  • Locate and identify underground utilities including water mains, electrical lines, phone/fiber lines, and sewer lines
  • Respond to emergency calls at all hours to correct electrical problems on a rotating call in list
  • Complete work safely in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Assist the project management team with specifying technical equipment and performance standards during planning and design of new buildings or the renovation of existing ones, including external infrastructure considerations
  • Perform electrical inspections as assigned and replace lamps as necessary
  • Maintain elevators and related power systems
  • Effectively operate all power tools and equipment currently used in the electrical shop
  • Report major malfunctions immediately to the supervisor
  • Complete work in a prompt, neat, and professional manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
  • Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other department personnel and the campus community
  • Participate in training programs

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
  • State of Maine Journeyman's or better Electrician's License required
  • Ability to work with computers and Microsoft Office programs required
  • Experience working with electrical and control systems found in a heating/power plant a plus
  • Capable of working on and troubleshooting low voltage systems like fire alarm, card access, and energy management systems
  • Skill to install, repair, and troubleshoot control systems and electrical systems found on college campuses including systems found in institutional buildings, power plants, and commercial kitchens
  • Experience with construction, maintenance, and repair of primary (12,470V) and secondary (120V, 208/240V, 277V and 480V) electrical systems desired
  • Knowledge of energy efficient systems and sustainable building practices desired
  • Ability to operate all power tools and equipment currently used in the electrical shop
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
  • Valid driver's license required and must meet the College's Fleet Safety Policy requirements
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

The journeyman electrician reports to the supervisor of mechanical and electrical services and interacts regularly with faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Position hours are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime as necessary to support operations. General indoor and outdoor campus environment. Position involves frequent movement, must be able to walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. Driving of College vehicles required. Computer and tool usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. The position requires a pre-employment physical.
