Department Statement:
The University Museums at Colgate is seeking a Museum Operations Manager with strengths in management and communications to coordinate our growing University Museums program during a moment of strategic planning and implementation.
The University Museums consists of Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology. Reporting to two co-directors and overseeing colleagues whose roles also span the two museums, he/she/they will have primary responsibility for project management, communications, coordination of daily operations, and strategic planning and implementation of interdisciplinary initiatives across campus.
The University Museums are at an exciting point in their history. As a key component of Colgate’s ambitious Middle Campus Plan for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation, our team is currently reenvisioning and redefining how academic museums fit into the contemporary liberal arts experience and into the cultural fabric of the regional communities into which the campus is embedded. Our strategic plan prioritizes implementing decolonizing practices across museum operations, creating a more inclusive and accessible program, increasing student and faculty engagement, enhancing collaborations on and off campus, and developing collections that represent a wider range of identities and experiences. The Museum Operations Manager will be a key partner in developing and implementing the next phase of our strategic plan to guide the University Museums.

Accountabilities:
  • Managing professional staff and establishing performance goals, allocating resources, and assessing policies for supervisees.
  • Managing day-to-day operations including staffing galleries, preparing for special events, supporting faculty, student, and public use of museum spaces, and supporting collaborations
  • Developing and implementing strategies for communicating about museum programs. exhibitions, and other projects, as well as collaboration opportunities with audiences on and off campus, including through print media, digital platforms, website, social media, advertising, press releases, and other campus and community outlets. Work closely with the University Communications Department to effectively implement communications strategies.
  • Tracking progress on projects, maintaining budgets, tracking staff expenditures and managing expense reporting using Concur.
  • Coordinating contracts and logistics for collaborations with artists, vendors, and independent contractors.
  • Assisting exhibition project managers to keep production schedules on track, such as supporting publication and coordinating with University Printing.
  • Supporting curricular use of exhibitions and collections by coordinating with staff to schedule class visits and other faculty and student use of collections.
  • Coordinating and supporting community visits to the museums.
  • Ensuring museum facilities and systems are operating as expected and effectively support the museums. Manage facility requests with parties on and off-campus, including the University Buildings and Grounds Department and external security and storage vendors,
  • Administering and implementing security policies and procedures, in collaboration with co-directors and head of collections.
  • Regularly reviewing, updating and executing disaster preparedness plans.
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal requirements and Colgate University policies, overseeing investigations of all of all accidents, injuries, fires, property theft or damage, and any other incidents that may imply risk.
  • Establishing or strengthening DEAI and decolonizing practices across museum operations.
  • Performing other related duties as needed.


Professional Experience/Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of project management experience
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience with strategic planning and implementation
  • Previous experience managing budgets
  • Solid understanding of and commitment to equity and inclusion practices

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of project management experience
  • 3+ years progressive experience in a leadership role, preferably in a museum, non-profit organization, or higher education institution
  • Previous project management experience in an arts or cultural institution
  • Previous experience with sustained community engagement
  • Experience with grant research, writing, management, and reporting


Education
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required
  • A Master’s degree in arts administration, communications, business, non-profit management, or museum-related fields is preferred
