We have two Major Gifts Officer positions available. These experienced Major Gifts Officers will identify, build, and manage a portfolio of prospective and current major gift donors who are capable of giving at levels of $25K to $1M+. One MGO will service the western US region and one will service the southern US region. These Major Gifts Officers will be responsible for first qualifying prospective donors to build a robust portfolio of 75+ major supporters, and then building customized and strategic plans to engage these high-value constituents with Compassion's top ministry funding priorities, resulting in portfolios generating $1.5M+ annually.

Preferences (but not requirements) for home location of each respective MGO:

  • West Region Major Gifts Officer: Denver/Colorado Springs, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, or Phoenix

  • South Region Major Gifts Officer: Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina

What will you do?

  • Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion's ministry in prayer.

  • Acts as an advocate to raise the awareness of the needs of children. Understands Christ's mandate to protect children. Commits to and prioritizes child protection considerations in all decision-making, tasks and activities across the ministry. Abides by all behavioral expectations in Compassion's Statement of Commitment to Child Protection and Code of Conduct. Reports any concerns of abuse, neglect or exploitation of children through Compassion's internal reporting process and appropriately supports responses to incidents if they occur.

  • Uphold and engage in Compassion's core Cultural Behaviors.

  • Works systematically and strategically to build and develop a robust portfolio of 75+ supporters capable of giving at $25K to $1M+ through identifying and qualifying prospective donor leads identified via internal pipelines and networking with existing donor relationships.

  • Creatively crafts and customizes complex engagement plans to cultivate key supporter relationships to foster trust and gauge readiness for solicitation. These plans incorporate a variety of engagement strategies such as in person and virtual meetings, special events, international trips, phone calls, and written correspondence.

  • Invites these key relationships into philanthropic partnership with Compassion through bold solicitations aimed at securing high-level gifts (cash, DAF contributions, complex assets, multi-year pledges, planned gifts, etc.) that align their passions with top ministry priorities.

  • In collaboration with our Stewardship and Communications Team, thoughtfully connects major donors to the impact of their philanthropic contributions.

  • Sets multi-faceted fundraising forecasts and timelines to achieve individual and team annual revenue goals to empower the ministry to advance outcomes with more children, more quickly-ultimately releasing them from poverty.

  • Has the opportunity to participate in and lead international trips to Compassion program sites in the 29 countries where we operate, showing firsthand how their contributions are making an impact, and/or deepening their engagement and awareness of Compassion's work to inspire future generosity.

  • Coordinates and facilitates meetings for major donors with Compassion's president, other executive leaders, international field staff, etc.

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.

  • Seven years of relevant experience working in Major Gift Development or a related field.

  • Ability to travel up to 40% of normal schedule.

  • Ability to travel internationally.
