Position Purpose

The Director, International Student Support at Dartmouth College serves as the lead administrator responsible for international student support on campus. Serving undergraduates, graduate students, and professional students, the Director coordinates support across a variety of different academic levels specific to international students and provides programming for international students in the context of Dartmouth's larger curricular and cocurricular goals. Works closely with other members of the campus community that supports aspects of global Dartmouth, e.g., Office of Visa and Immigration Services, Office of Pluralism and Leadership, and the division of Institutional Diversity and Equity, as well as with other student support professionals.

Masters or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • At least six years' experience in international student support in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, identify opportunities, and take action to build effective cross-departmental and cross-divisional relationships to achieve institutional goals.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication, planning, project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to prepare detailed reports, create educational programs, and produce assessments.
  • Working knowledge of insurance, tax, and employment issues related to international students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing best practices across multiple offices in large, complex organizations.
  • A track record of commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ongoing engagement with professional organizations (e.g., NAFSA)
  • Experience living, working, and/or studying abroad.

Key Accountabilities

Description

Student Support –
  • Directs undergraduate international student support and coordinates graduate and professional school international student support. This includes arrival support; international student orientation; barrier removal; housing and transportation support; health and wellness support; and inclusivity. Establishes appropriate parameters around addressing needs.
  • Liaises with the Office of Visa and Immigration Services (OVIS), Financial Aid Office, and others to help students access information on regulations and financial need from the appropriate offices.
  • Creates a cross-departmental transition team that formalizes the transition process for undergraduate students from Admissions to on-campus support.
  • Works with the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, Tuck School of Business, Geisel School of Medicine, and Thayer School of Engineering to ensure that appropriate concerns specific to international graduate and professional students are addressed.
  • Develops and regularly updates an international student handbook to serve as a guide for incoming students.

Institutional coordination –
  • Serves as the hub for international student support; addresses international student needs across the institution.
  • Develops and oversees a comprehensive plan for supporting the international student population across campus in coordination with other entities on campus; works as a partner and collaborator.
  • Annually evaluates information provided to students in advance of their arrival at Dartmouth to make sure it is comprehensive and appropriate to their needs.

Programming –
  • Develops programming, both on and off campus, that fosters cross-cultural understanding and provides leadership opportunities for international students across the campus.
  • Liaises with OVIS, the Center for Professional Development, and other campus career offices on internship, post-graduate fellowships, and career tracks for international students.
  • Works to ensure ongoing opportunities for international students to connect with alumni.
