Position Purpose

Join a team of scientists striving to better understand mucosal and systemic antibody responses to infection, treatment, and vaccination by setting up and conducting research studies using established methods and assisting in the development of novel platforms.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp

Bachelors plus 1-2 year(s) of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Bachelor's degree with a major in one of the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or the equivalent.
• Two years of relevant research experience or the equivalent working in a laboratory is highly desirable.
• High competency in basic laboratory skills (pipetting, weighing, and recordkeeping).
• Moderate competency in one or more of the following: robotic liquid handling, flow cytometry, protein chemistry, or analytical chemistry.
• Ability to lift a 50 pound container of liquid.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to learn, develop, and apply new techniques.
• Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
• Good organizational and time management skills.
• Editorial skills for preparation of reports.
• Willingness to work with hazardous materials such as infectious materials, human and simian bodily fluids, and/or hazardous chemicals.
• Knowledge of computers and software applications.

Research/Experiments

• Works as a member of a collaborative group to accomplish projects in a reasonable timeframe.

• Independently sets up laboratory experiments/tests, utilizing a range of established methods, procedures, and techniques (e.g robotics/automated liquid handling, flow cytometry, analytical chemistry, etc).

• Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design, procedures, equipment, and facilities.

• As necessary, develops and/or implements new or modified research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.

• Adheres to laboratory standard operating procedures, to ensure Good Clinical Laboratory Practices ( GCLP), including careful documentation and strict protocol adherence.

Data Collection/Preparation

• Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.

• Records and stores data according to laboratory standards with the highest level of data integrity.

• Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.

• Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc.

• Participates in the preparation of reports and presentations of the research findings. Presents at laboratory meetings.

• Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by drafting portions of the text, preparing graphs, tables, and charts, etc.

Laboratory

• Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.

• Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.

• Accomplishes day-to-day care and housekeeping of laboratory.

• Monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance; obtains maintenance and repair as necessary.

• Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities
