Under the supervision of Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges staff, Watercraft Stewards will offer watercraft and trailer inspections as well as educational materials
at public boat launches throughout the Finger Lakes region. Stewards will collect data on inspections, launch users, and invasive species findings. Watercraft inspections entail visual examination and removal of plants or other organic material from boats and trailers and identifying aquatic invasive species. Stewards will help disseminate critical conservation messaging and initiatives to the public. Qualified candidates will be considered for watercraft decontamination steward positions. Decontamination stewards conduct similar job duties as stewards, and conduct additional boat decontaminations when necessary and appropriate. Decontamination positions are limited, and offer increased compensation to reflect added responsibilities and job duties. Locations for these positions include but are not limited to public boat launches on Hemlock, Canadice, Honeoye, Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga, Owasco, and Otisco Lakes; in addition to parts of the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario in Rochester, NY.



ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct public education and outreach regarding the significance of New York's aquatic ecosystems and the threat of invasive species spreading at boat launches

  • Perform watercraft inspections, collect data from inspections, and enter data electronically

  • Attend tabling and educational events regionally

  • Attend weekly meetings with FLI staff at work site to discuss progress and data collected

  • Attend meetings with FLI staff at HWS for continued training and programmatic updates

  • Attend multi-day training conducted by the Finger Lakes PRISM and FLI staff

  • Participate in FLI-hosted service events such as invasive species pulls

    This is a seasonal (summer), non-benefits-eligible position. Position is based at boat launches throughout the Finger Lakes region and requires travel to Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The Finger Lakes PRISM is one of eight PRISMs supported via funding from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund as administered by NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Willingness and ability to travel and to work nights and weekends on occasion. Access to reliable transportation is required. Employee will be reimbursed at the federally approved rate for work related travel when using personal vehicle for travel beyond their commute. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Pay range is $17.00 - $19.00 per hour.


    Qualifications
    · Experience in environmental education, natural resources management, biology, ecology, environmental studies/science, or a related field is preferred

    · Knowledge of aquatic invasive species and general ecology of the Great Lakes and Finger Lakes region is preferred

    · Excellent interpersonal communication skills; must have the ability to clearly present information and ideas to a diverse audience

    · Ability to work independently and responsibly without direct supervision

    · Ability to accurately collect data according to established protocol

    · Must have access to reliable transportation; must provide own transportation to work sites
    and meeting locations

    · Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, e.g., long hours in the sun

    · Must be able to work weekends and holidays
