Position Summary and Purpose

The Director of Development is primarily responsible for leading, directing and managing IOCC's fundraising and marketing strategies. This position is also responsible for, but not limited to: establishing annual plans and budgets for fundraising activities and platforms that drive fundraising revenue to advance the organization's mission; determining fundraising audiences and channels for IOCC (e.g., individuals, organizations and private foundations); guiding and managing all aspects of the organization's fundraising, including conceptualization and execution of fundraising campaigns and activities; and, acting as a spokesperson for IOCC, interfacing and building relationships with key donors. Working closely with the Executive Director & CEO, the Board's Development and Communications Committee, and the Executive Team, this position acts as the primary fundraiser for IOCC. This position also provides leadership for the Development Department.


Responsibilities and Essential Functions

1. Institutional Strategy Development: As a member of the Executive Team, contributes to the institutional strategic planning process and plan execution. Creates annual fundraising operating plan, including setting departmental budget and annual fund activities in consultation with Executive Leadership, ensuring operational plan and budget meet overall institutional direction. Communicates and collaborates with the Development and Communications Committee Chair and Executive Director to execute institutional goals as set by the Board.

2. Fundraising Strategy Development: Leads the development and implementation of IOCC's revenue growth and diversification strategy in coordination with Executive Team and Board of Directors, aligned with organizational strategic plan and goals. Tracks fundraising goals and trends and identifies opportunities for expansion efforts for individual, organizational, or private foundation gifts. Develops and oversees annual workplan.

3. Fundraising Strategy Implementation: Provides oversight and guidance to development team in executing campaigns and strategies for individual, organizational, or private foundation gifts.

4. Donor Prospecting and Acquisition: Provides leadership to identify, qualify, and pursue fundraising opportunities and potential sources of revenue. Engages leadership, both fellow IOCC Executives and Board Members, in donor identification, cultivation, and major gift asks.

5. Donors Relations: Maintains a personal portfolio of (3-5) major donors, defined as those capable of giving a gift of $10,000+, as well as existing donors and prospects that have the capacity to give at the major level or higher. Serves as the primary relationship manager for this portfolio of prospects. Serves as primary contact for securities and planned gifts.

6. Marketing Strategy Development: Creates effective and comprehensive marketing strategies to communicate to the right audiences at the right time to maximize engagement and minimize donor fatigue. Partners closely with Director of Communications and oversees IOCC's. Oversees all direct mail and digital fundraising marketing initiatives, ensuring efficacy and evaluating successes/failures through analysis of reports and results to provide insights and give direction for improved outcomes.

7. Parish Outreach and Engagement: Conduct visits and outreach activities to increase engagement and awareness of parishes in IOCC's overall mission and humanitarian work.

8. Donor Reporting: Oversees the tracking and submission of required reports to institutional donors on prescribed timelines. Prepares detailed department reports for various IOCC initiatives and activities.

9. Events and Outreach: Oversees the institution's fundraising event planning and outreach activities including donor/volunteer engagement.

10. Leadership: Recruits, hires, trains, coaches, supervises, evaluates, and develops a staff of development professionals. Develops and manages the fundraising/development budget. Contribute to the development of project proposals and budgets to ensure resources for strategic positioning and visibility efforts.

11. Vendor Oversight: Oversees vendor relationships, including budgeting and approvals.

Minimally Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Marketing and Storytelling Skills: Mastery of knowledge and skills in delivering compelling stories of impact to various audiences.

* Public Speaking Skills: Mastery in communication and public speaking skills to interact, engage, and communicate with donors, volunteers, clergy, and internal and external stakeholders with a high level of emotional intelligence (curiosity, active listening, servant leadership)

* Fundraising Principles: Advanced knowledge of principles and techniques relevant to Major Gift fundraising, annual giving fundraising, and planned gifts. Belong to a fundraiser association to ensure ethics, tact, and donor confidentiality.

* Interpersonal Skills: Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of potential donors and supporters. Excellent team building and management ability. Ability to delegate and prioritize, mentoring staff to do the same. Exceptional leadership skills. Exceptional communication skills. Ability to be comfortable in different types of settings and ability to work well with a wide range of people.

* Organization, Planning, and Multi-Tasking: Advanced organizational and planning skills, project planning, and management skills. Proven ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and multi-task with minimal supervision and accuracy. Proven ability to coordinate activities.

* Leadership and Supervision: Proven ability to lead, supervise, and coach members of staff in different locations.

* Software Applications: Mastery of knowledge of Microsoft products, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. Mastery of knowledge of software applications for web-based solutions, social media platforms, and apps.

* Analysis and Sound Judgement: Advanced analytical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to make sound judgments. Ability to improve processes, promote excellence, and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.

* Languages: Proven ability to write and speak using the English language.

* Communications: Advanced oral and written communication skills using different forms of media. Ability to translate complex concepts to individuals at all levels.

* Influencing and Customer Service Skills: Proven ability to influence using diplomacy skills with key stakeholders. In-depth demonstrated customer service skills.

* Self-Management and Teamwork: Ability to work independently or as a member of the team, ability to be detailed-oriented and consistently accurate, ability to manage stress effectively in a fast-paced environment, and ability to quickly learn new systems, processes, and procedures and adapt local practices to global standards.

* Confidentiality: Proven ability to maintain confidentiality on work-related issues.

Minimally Required Education, Experience, and Training

* Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in a related field preferred.

* 10 years of professional fundraising and marketing experience with progressive management and leadership required.

* Proven success in the closure of multiple six and seven-figure major gifts. Mastery of major gifts, planned gift types and tools, direct marketing, annual campaigns and strategy, and volunteer management are strongly preferred.

* Familiarity and/or experience with Orthodox institutions preferred.

* Work experience with a multinational organization, NGO, faith-based, or similar non-profit organization, including leading international staff and vendors required.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

Travel required: regular travel each month (approx. 50%)

Uses cellular and desk phone, laptop, or desktop computer; dexterity to operate office equipment.

Standard office environment; mostly sedentary position; sits talking on the phone for long periods of time.

May require bending, kneeling, crawling, standing, sitting, lifting up to 20 lbs.

Infrequent weekend and evening work may be required.
