The Department of Justice Studies at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Justice Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2023. We are seeking candidates with teaching and research interests in the area of Youth Justice - broad conceptualizations of justice as it impacts children and youth, including but not limited to juvenile justice.
Justice Studies is an interdisciplinary department that employs 13 full-time faculty from a broad range of academic disciplines (e.g., sociology, criminology, geography, political science, American Studies) and which offers students an opportunity to consider broad questions of justice in multiple (often overlapping) contexts. We especially welcome faculty who are comfortable in such an interdisciplinary environment.
Requirements:
The successful candidate would contribute to the new Center for Innovation in Youth Justice (CIYJ) and facilitate the growth of the associated Youth Justice minor, while also teaching courses in the Justice Studies major (where the Youth Justice minor and the CIYJ are housed). Scholars who have interests in areas such as Restorative Justice and the intersections between research and practice (as applied to issues of justice), as well as those who identify as inter- or cross-disciplinary scholars especially are encouraged to apply. Teaching responsibilities include (but are not limited to) research methods and upper-level courses in the candidate's area of specialty. Ability to teach a general education course on Justice in American society is a plus.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should possess a strong and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and scholarship and hold a Ph.D. in a social science discipline. ABDs with expected 2023 graduation dates will be considered.
Review of applications begins 11/28/2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.
