EQUIPMENT OPERATORS: Class A or B CDL & Current Med Cert Required. If Class B, must obtain Class A within 1 year from hire date. Operates heavy equipment as necessary for county road maintenance, snow removal & construction projects. Relevant experience required. Wage $24.85 /hour. JOB SUMMARY: Maintains and operates a wide variety of heavy equipment utilized in conducting County road construction and maintenance projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Operates heavy equipment to include: bulldozers, large front end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, asphalt and oil distributor-spreader, pneumatic and steel wheel rollers, belly dump, low boy, snow removal equipment, and other similar equipment. Operates heavy equipment for digging and opening ditches, grading shoulders and slopes, and other rough grading. Operates equipment in clearing of right-of-way, trenching, filling and back filling, and snow removal. Operates asphalt equipment in road construction and maintenance work. Operates equipment to remove and replace culverts and small bridges, assuring proper drainage is maintained by utilizing eye level or transit and grade rod. Removes contaminated material from ditches to assure proper flow. Loads and places sand, earth, rock, asphalt, and other road construction and maintenance materials. Performs minor repairs and conducts routine maintenance service to assigned equipment. Familiar with the safe use of a variety of hand tools used in the construction of maintenance of county roads and bridges. Operates equipment for the purpose of snow removal. Performs other related duties as assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED; and, One to three years of progressively responsible related experience; or, Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A. Flagger's Certificate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of functions and operating methods of a variety of construction and related equipment utilized in work such as excavating, loading, digging, working to grade, and rolling. All applicable safety rules and regulations for operation and transportation of heavy construction equipment. Safe use of a variety of hand tools used in the construction/maintenance of roads. Principles and practices of construction and maintenance of roads.

Skill in: Operation, maintenance, and performance of routine repairs of assigned equipment.

Ability to: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to operate all assigned equipment with limited supervision. Ability to safely operate all assigned equipment. Ability to assist emergency mechanical and fabrication repairs.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, wet or humid conditions, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is also frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Working time may require irregular hours, on-call status, and/or shift times. The incumbent's working conditions are typically loud to very loud.
