The Fort Worth Star-Telegram seeks an Opinion writer to cover and analyze a rapidly changing city, now the 12th-largest in the United States. This journalist will hold leaders accountable, spot problems and explore solutions, and ensure communities aren’t left behind.

The ideal candidate will be in a position to help shape our region’s future and build a profile as a journalist who makes a difference. As an editorial writer and columnist, you’ll move at the speed of news, aiming to serve a digital audience with timely opinion and analysis grounded in reporting and experience. You’ll be at the forefront of our efforts to grow our audience and serve our subscribers and the citizenry at large.

We’re looking for a strong writer with proven reporting skills, including the ability to break news, conduct fruitful interviews and research in various areas, all on deadline. We want a thinker with an interest in a range of topics — including politics and government, education, housing and other economic issues, healthcare and culture — and who can dive fearlessly into new concerns.

Fort Worth is part of the fourth-largest media market in the U.S., with cultural gems, diverse communities and, yes, killer barbecue. It’s a fascinating news town and a great place to live.

What you'll bring:

Strong writing skills, including the ability and willingness to speak on behalf of the Editorial Board and argue positions you may not entirely share.
An ability to synthesize and analyze to give readers a thoughtful perspective on issues and events.
A commitment to accountability journalism and demonstrated ability to execute it on both short- and long-term pieces.
A strong belief in the importance of local/state news and digging deep into several local communities.
Digital-journalism reflexes and storytelling chops, including a willingness to experiment with new forms and tools.
Audience focus, including a zeal for understanding and using readership data, mastering SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital and pursue innovative approaches to reach underserved audiences.
An ability and willingness to interact with subscribers, learn their needs and desires, and craft journalism that helps them understand and navigate their community and hold their leaders accountable.
An enterprise mentality and desire to go deeper on a story.
Not required, but preferred: Spanish proficiency; time spent living and/or reporting in Texas; proficiency with data journalism; and multimedia skills, including video recording/editing and podcasting.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or related experience in a relevant field
At least five years of experience writing and or editing news, preferably in a digital-first environment.
