The Superintendent of Grounds is primarily responsible for creating an environment that attracts guests and enhances the resort experience as well as future grounds projects. This is done by providing strategic leadership, proactive planning and effective management to the grounds team and includes resort grounds and landscaping for all outdoor, non-golf surfaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Direct, plan, supervise, and perform work for resort grounds and landscaping.
  • Collaborate on all land development initiatives with Executive Team and ownership, landscape design elements, including expansion projects.
  • Direct resort lawn care, weeding, watering, planting, growing, and snow removal.
  • Serve as the resort Arborist with a tree management plan - raise, maintain, prune, hedge, and remove as necessary.
  • Study the health and safety plan for all trees on property.
  • Apply pesticides on grounds and trees as scheduled and necessary.
  • Create and receive approval for the annual financial and capital budget.
  • Manage salaries and wages in-line with the approved plan.
  • Manage operating expense in-line with the approved plan.
  • Receive approval in advance for projects outside the scope of the existing plan.
  • In partnership with Engineering, manage the grounds equipment and fleet to appropriately maintain equipment for the life of the asset.
  • Create, gain agreement, and execute a 5-year beautification plan.
  • Maintain, and create when necessary, all formal landscaping gardens, natural and desirable landscape features, sidewalks, parking areas, fields, irrigation, and other outdoor areas.
  • Interact with guests utilizing Nemacolin’s brand standards, providing the guest with information on the resort, the grounds, and highlighting unique features of the resort and its landscape offerings.
  • Ensure grounds associates utilize the resort service standards in exceeding guest expectations by being excellent and engaged in their daily job tasks.
  • Play a role in the selection and integration of all grounds associates.
  • Train staff, ensuring performance quality and esthetically stimulating environments for guests.
  • Create standard operating procedures that establish clarity and consistency, drive accountability, and ensure safe operation and execution.
  • Create work schedules and prioritize services.
  • Coach, manage, evaluate, and provide performance feedback to a diverse, predominantly seasonal staff building a cohesive team.
  • Responds to ownership’s specific requests regarding the grounds of the resort and personal homes.
  • Assist in monitoring assigned special projects and tasks as they arise.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Degree or certified in horticulture required.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a Superintendent of Grounds – preferably in a hotel/resort setting.
  • 10+ years’ experience in related field.
  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience in a corporate setting.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Able to meet the demands of working outdoors in a physical demanding role (must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds as well as work in extreme temperatures).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, when necessary.
  • Must be able to speak English, with bilingual Spanish abilities preferred.
