Job Description
Provides administrative clerical support to the department faculty, staff, and students. Also provides program support to the Chair, Endowed Chair of Physical Sciences, Assistant Chair, Undergraduate Program Director, and Graduate Program Director. Monitors all departmental travel budgets and the departmental gift account. Leads and directs the main office wage hourly and/or work study staff.

Considerable knowledge of effective office management techniques. Considerable knowledge of effective customer service and problem resolution techniques. Considerable knowledge of basic accounting including reconciling financial documents and reports, and creating a variety of standard and financial reports using spreadsheet and database software. Working knowledge of effective communication techniques with a diverse public. Demonstrated ability to effectively handle multiple, changing priorities while meeting deadlines and providing customer service. Considerable knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. Working knowledge of electronic filing systems. Considerable organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast paced environment. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong time management and organizational skills. Some proofreading skills to include the ability to pay close attention to detail. Ability to collect, compile, and analyze data. Ability to analyze and resolve administrative problems. Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Considerable clerical experience to include: drafting, formatting, keying, and proofing correspondence; data entry; arranging travel; and maintaining a professional's calendar. Some experience processing leave, payroll, and financial documents.
Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)
Some experience working in an academic department of a college or university preferred. Banner training preferred. Working knowledge of university policies and procedures to include ODU E1-S and Research Foundation. High school diploma or equivalent that included or was supplemented by training in office management or related field. Computer software training (classroom or on-the-job) in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or equivalent software.
