The Board of Education of the Utica City School District welcomes broadly experienced, highly qualified candidates to submit their application for the position of Superintendent of Schools. Anticipated salary will be $260,000-$300,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate should be available to assume the position on or about September 2024.

We are looking for a superintendent who is committed to equity and has proven experience improving access and opportunities for all students. Our ideal candidate will exemplify honesty, integrity, trustworthiness and strength of character; understand the perspectives, voices and challenges found within our diverse, urban school system; effectively lead and collaborate with our personnel and community; exhibit outstanding communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and planning skills; maintain a strong focus on academic excellence; and possess or be able to possess New York State Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).

In the Utica City School District, we are committed to ensuring that all students attain the knowledge, skills and character necessary to become productive members of society. We provide the opportunities, resources, and support to engage each student to maximize their abilities. This is accomplished through supportive and adaptive special education and English language learner programming, Career and Technical Education programming, a robust honors and Advanced Placement curriculum, and partnerships with post-secondary institutions. We provide numerous co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, and incorporate several agency partners to nurture the social, emotional, intellectual and physical wellbeing of our students.

Our District is comprised of 13 schools -- Proctor High School, Donovan Middle School, JFK Middle School and 10 elementary schools -- and enrolls approximately 9,644 students. Our greatest asset is our diversity, with more than 50 languages spoken and 16% of students being English language learners. Our 1,597 faculty and staff are dedicated to the success of our students, more than 7,000 of whom face economic challenges.

We serve a community of approximately 64,500 city residents. Located on the Mohawk River, Utica is the 10th-most-populous city in New York State. Utica is approximately 95 miles west-northwest of Albany, 55 miles east of Syracuse and 240 miles northwest of New York City. The Board of Education is being assisted in the selection by Patricia N. Kilburn, Ed.D., District Superintendent of the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, who will work with the Board to screen applicants and make recommendations regarding candidates. The Board will make all decisions concerning the selection process, the evaluation of candidates and the final appointment.
