Head of School's Office at Phillips Academy seeks a Director of Summer Session and Outreach Programs beginning September 1, 2024. A July 1st start would be ideal.

The Director's Role:

Supported by a year-round office staff, the director oversees all marketing and recruitment strategies, and is responsible for hiring deans, program coordinators, teachers and teaching assistants and assignment of campus facilities during the summer. The director also collaborates with the Academy's administration to advance the institution's mission of promoting intellectual growth, character development and diversity. In addition to the director, the Summer Session is assisted during the school year by an assistant director, a finance director, a human resource coordinator and two more office staff members.

Major Responsibilities:

  • The Director is the summertime lead contact person with Office of the Physical Plant, dining services, and the athletic department and collaboratively manages decision making associated with determining programmatic use of the academy's physical plant.
  • The Director is the lead coordinator of all summer programming. They also work collaboratively with the Office of Academy Resources and the Director of Communications in support of outreach programming, publications, publicity, fundraising, and research.
  • The Director collaborates with the Academy's administration to advance the institution's progressive mission of promoting intellectual growth, character development and diversity.
  • The Director also serves as Operational Coordinator for the Outreach Programs. This position works with the Outreach Directors throughout the year to plan and coordinate interconnected budgetary issues, summer schedules, summer facility use, and other essential operating functions.

Education/Experience:

A master's degree plus five years of administrative experience including managing a large and complex budget is preferred.

About Phillips Academy Summer Session

The Phillips Academy Summer Session is an intensive 5-week, pre-college, residential, and academic program. A summer faculty of 125 offer more than 60 courses representing many academic disciplines, a focused college counseling program, a multi-level English as a Second Language program, SAT Prep, and a variety of afternoon and weekend activities. Last year's Summer Session enrolled 550 students from 42 states and 48 countries. As Director of Summer Session, the successful candidate will manage a year-round office staff of 6, oversee all marketing and recruitment strategies, assign campus facilities during the summer and be responsible for hiring deans, program coordinators, teachers, and teaching assistants. The director also oversees efforts to use the facilities more effectively across campus to generate additional revenue to support the Academy's mission. Summer session may expand to include e-summer, summer advantage, and other summer programming that has existed in the past.

The Academy operates four outreach programs - Andover Bread Loaf, Institute for Recruitment of Teachers: IRT, Math and Science for Minority Students: (MS)2, and Phillips Academy and Lawrence Schools: PALS. As Director of the Academy's Outreach programs, the successful applicant will work with and oversee the four individual outreach directors on all operational, financial, and personnel aspects of the programs. This role includes meeting regularly with the outreach directors during the academic year. (MS)2 and PALS are closely integrated with Summer Session and take place during the same time frame.
