Job Description Summary

Responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of an effective financial reporting and internal control program that adequately supports the institution. This includes grants accounting, accounts payable, payments, account reconciliations, journal entries, account creation, and accounting entries for capital improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • Three years of full-time or equivalent experience in a responsible accounting position, preferably in higher or public education.
  • Two years of supervisory experience
  • Experience working with a complex financial management system.
  • CPA preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Prepares, examines, and analyzes accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
  • Documents financial transactions by entering account information.
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting entries and financial reports.
  • Works with Senior Accountant/Budget Officer to ensure a clean and timely year end audit.
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Prepares journal entries and reconciles various general ledger accounts.
  • Interacts with outside agencies, independent auditors and college community.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Review and recommend changes to workflow and internal control as needed.
  • Provides support to grants accountant to include financial reporting preparation.
  • Establishes new account numbers.
  • Prepares the federal and state reports at year end.
  • Monitors, prepares reports, and invoices for all capital improvement projects funded by state and county government.
  • Investigates and resolves any issues with capital leases, journal entries, or incorrect payments.
  • Assists with the preparation of financial statements and footnotes for the fiscal year end audit.
  • Works with auditors to provide end of year information regarding fixed asset schedules, leases, statement of cash flows, and notes to the financial statements.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Detail-oriented with analytical skills; able to handle multi-tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB pronouncements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
