Overview

We are seeking an experienced engineer (>7 years relevant experience) with background in nuclear engineering to support neutronics analysis of various components. This includes practice working on nuclear heating on superconducting coils for next step fusion devices such as Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF). A background in mechanical design and field work is needed. Programming experience will also be required to run and support analysis of Monte Carlo Neutronics Programming (MCNP) code.

A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy — a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us!

Responsibilities

PPPL’s Engineering Design Analysis & CAD (DAC) Division is a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on developing the engineering designs and advancing the state-of-the-art magnetic confinement plasma physics research devices around the world. This group specialize in high-field magnets, diagnostics, and plasma facing components for nuclear fusion experiments at PPPL and collaborator facilities world-wide. The core competencies of the DAC Division include the design and implementation of: high vacuum components and systems, high heat flux components, coupled electro-mechanical systems in high electo-mechanical flux environments, material science, metrology, and in-vacuum motion devices.

Core Duties:

  • The candidate must have experience working with Monte Carlo Neutronics Analysis methods using MCNP code and/or it’s variant OpenMC. The work will involve three-dimensional neutronics analysis, complex neutronics source import, and results coupling to other modeling tools.
  • Python script programming capabilities will be helpful here as well.
  • 3D neutronics analysis and development of report summarizing work. Working closely with lead Engineers to understand requirements, boundary conditions and optimizing design.
  • Additional roles may involve more conventual mechanical engineering design and analysis tasks.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering helpful.
  • Professional experience, >7 years (inclusive of post-BS academic experience), highly valuable if experience is in a scientific or research & development environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • MCNP code, OpenMC code, Python, CREO, Solidworks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work will be performed in an office environment and requires utilizing standard office equipment. Unlikely need to enter on-site confined spaces or handle equipment greater than 25lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is full time on-site (5) days per week. Position has the possible occasional need for extended work hours or weekend support (expected to be no greater than 5% level) largely dependent on schedule commitments of project.
