Overview

The Campbell-Staton laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University seeks a Research Specialist. The Campbell-Staton lab' s research interests include the genetic, regulatory and physiological basis of rapid evolutionary adaptation, often in response to anthropogenic change.

The responsibilities of the Research Specialist I will include: Animal husbandry and experiments with live animals such as performance assays, respirometry etc; Lab work such as DNA and RNA extraction, QC and library preps as well as basic computational analyses of genomic sequencing data; assisting lab members on specific research projects involving genetic, physiological, and molecular studies; assist in various aspects of the lab's daily operations such as monitoring and ordering lab supplies. The ideal candidate will also have an opportunity to develop their own research project/s over time.



Responsibilities

1. Animal husbandry and live animal work – This will include
- daily animal care: misting, feeding, health checks, cage changes etc
- detailed recordkeeping: births, mortalities, experimental treatments, sample and specimen inventory etc
- helping maintain animal housing spaces and procedure rooms in compliance with animal welfare guidelines,
- performing or assisting with data and sample collection such as X-ray imaging, performance assays, physiology or behavioral experiments, tissue dissections etc.

2. Field and Labwork
- animal collections in the wild
- field experiments
- DNA and RNA extraction and QC
- DNA AND RNA Library preperation for sequencing
- DNA capture assays
- developing and troubleshooting experimental protocols

3. Processing, organization and storage of sequencing data
- Run basic sequence alignment and quality filtering protocols
- SNP calling and summary statistics of large sequence datasets
- Generating read counts and intron/exon split datasets from RNAseq data.

4. Lab management tasks
- Ordering lab supplies,
- Overseeing incoming and outgoing sample shipments, maintaining and updating sample (and freezer) inventories
- Assisting with administrative duties such as obtaining an renewing IACUC, IBC, IRB, EHS, USDA, CITES and CDC protocols/permits



Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree or Masters in an appropriate field of science,
- at least 1 year of research experience in animal husbandry, experimental physiology, genomics or molecular lab work.
- Ability to work independently,
- Attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping
- Strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills
- Abitlity to work as part of a larger team

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience doing field work
- Familiarity with basic computational analyses of Omics data
- Experience with general laboratory management
- Familiarity with IACUC, IBC, IRB, EHS, USDA, CITES and CDC protocols/permits
