Job Description
Sarah Lawrence College is seeking a full-time, live-in Resident Fellow (RF) to work within the Office of Residential Life. The Resident Fellow oversees a staff of RAs and potentially a small staff of additional student workers. The RF supports residents in their designated area of the campus while also maintaining a secondary role of working within Residential Education. The RF position is a ten-month appointment that is dedicated to engendering a positive living community and experience conducive to students’ holistic success, personal development, and well-being. The work of the RF supports the collaborative approach to accomplishing these goals of the division. The RF reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Education. The RF lives on campus in a one-bedroom apartment within a student residence hall.


Essential Duties Summary
Essential Functions
  • Supervise a staff of 6-12 Resident Advisors (RAs) through year-long individual and collective mentorship to develop their professional and personal skills. 
  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of fall and spring training for RAs.
  • Serve in a primary on-call rotation alongside the Assistant Directors and other RFs during evenings and weekends to support the safety and well-being of students in any elevated incidental circumstances. Serves on-call for about three cumulative weeks per semester.
  • Supervise the daily responsibilities of the RAs, including the planning and implementation of residential programming, fielding resident concerns, and assisting with housing operations.
  • Support RAs through biweekly 1 on 1 meetings and weekly group staff meetings.
  • Assist in overall Student Life office responsibilities, including answering phones and responding to emails at least one day per week.
 
Additional Responsibilities
  • Design and implement campus-wide programming to support the experiences of students living and learning on campus. Examples may include programs centered around well-being or around alcohol and other drug education.
  • Collaborate with campus partners such as Health and Wellness; Campus Safety; Student Involvement and Leadership; and Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging on programming initiatives.
  • Assist with planning and publicity for Resident Advisor hiring.
  • Oversee content creation for the ResLife instagram and MySLC page.
  • Assist with interdepartmental activities such as Celebrate SLC, Admitted Students Day, etc. 
  • Help create and steward partnerships with other offices to support the vision of the department.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of RA all-staff activities.
  • Provide individual and group mediation to resolve roommate conflicts, and assist in the management and resolution of residential interpersonal and intergroup conflicts that go beyond the scope of RA intervention.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for incidents reported on campus that violate the College’s Community Standards. Conduct officers meet with individual students for educational conversations about community standards and assign sanctions based on the situation.

  • A keen understanding of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Computer and database literacy and ability to effectively utilize technology
  • Ability to effectively manage several concurrent and overlapping responsibilities
  • Proactive, thorough, and effective communication style
  • Comfort working and living in a professional and residential setting
  • A valid state driver’s license
  • Ability to create and manage complex spreadsheets 
 
Education and Experience
  • 1-2 years of experience in planning, coordinating, and/or directing college-level activities
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
