The Classics Department at Skidmore College invites applications for an approved, full-time, one-year position in classical studies and ancient Mediterranean history at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2024.
We seek an historian of the Greco-Roman world (specialization open), who can elucidate broad networks of movement, exchange, and intercultural encounter. Applicants must be committed to teaching and mentoring enthusiastic undergraduates. We are particularly interested in candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, who can contribute to the diversity of our academic community. The teaching load is five courses, distributed over two terms. A completed Ph.D. is required before the start of the fall 2024 semester. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

- surveys of Greek and/or Roman history, cross-listed with Skidmore's History department;
- an upper-level seminar on the topic of their choice, accessible to both Classics and History majors; and
- Greek and/or Latin at all levels.
- have the doctoral degree at the time of application;
- have prior teaching experience and an active research agenda;
- have developed, or are able to develop, courses on cultures outside the established centers of Greece and Rome, which offer broad intercultural perspectives on the ancient Mediterranean; and
- can help us maintain ties with departments and programs such as History, Gender Studies, Religious Studies, Black Studies and others.
