Application Engineer Job Description

The Application Engineer will provide system development, operational and technical support, systems analysis, project management, reporting, planning, and training for multiple areas of the campus administrative software systems, including the primary ERP system Ellucian Banner. The application engineer will combine in-depth knowledge of Banner software, Apache Tomcat, and ORACLE/SQL with a keen eye for automation of these processes while working in-tandem with DevOps Engineering.

The position assumes responsibility for database management, ORACLE/Snowflake, shell/SQL scripting skills, and troubleshooting (break/fix) of these tools. An understanding of cloud-based technologies such as AWS and Linux systems such as RedHat would be useful for this role.

Major Responsibilities include:

  • Leverage system experience to provide technical direction and support to managers, users, and Information Technology staff regarding Ellucian Banner and other administrative software systems and supplemental software products

  • Responsible for enhancements, maintenance, modifications, and/or integration of the Banner database to Snowflake batch process via AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)

  • Provide feasibility and impact analysis of proposed changes on the production environment.

  • Implement Banner/Tomcat upgrades and respond to service issues

  • Take ownership and close out tickets for various work items posted by clients.

  • Close out security updates to software modules where appropriate

  • Maintain and update existing code base as needed to ensure technical reliability

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Developing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting Ellucian Banner

  • Developing, implementing, and/or enhancing of administrative software systems

  • Integrating 3rd party systems with existing environment (AWS/Snowflake)

  • Managing tasks, communication, and schedule of assigned projects

  • Identifying problems and suggesting solutions

  • Recommending procedural changes where necessary

  • Collaborating with Systems and Network teams for infrastructure needs, upgrades, and/or capacity planning for the administrative software systems

  • Acting as backup Database Administrator when necessary (ORACLE/Snowflake)

  • Performing duties as Middle Tier Administrator (Apache Tomcat)


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field with a minimum of 4-7 years' experience

  • Experience working with Oracle relational database systems including programming in PL/SQL

  • Experience with Snowflake

  • Experience working with Linux OS and scripting

  • Experience working with SQL (Structured Query Language)

  • Experience supporting Ellucian Banner

  • Experience and/or training in Snowflake and Oracle database administration

  • Experience and/or training in web application servers such as Tomcat

  • Experience in Automic scheduling software

  • Expertise in software development methodologies

  • Experience with AWS Cloud-based concepts and architecture

  • Experience with AWS Code Commit, Code Build, Code Deploy, and PipeLines

  • Working knowledge of Ruby or Python and known DevOps tools like Git and GitHub


In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $113,900 - $120,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
