Thomas Jefferson University seeks a visionary and collaborative academic physician leader to serve as the next Director of the Division of Cardiology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. The successful candidate will also serve as the Deputy Director of the newly created Jefferson Cardiovascular Institute, working closely with the Institute's Director, the renowned surgeon Dr. Joseph Bavaria, to integrate cardiovascular activities (clinical, research, and education) into a patient-centered clinical service line combining cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular medicine, vascular surgery, and interventional radiology across Jefferson Health's 17 hospitals and affiliated sites of care.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine, the Division Director will oversee a clinical team of over 130 providers, including a hybrid practice of 60 full-time academic and private practice cardiologists, ensuring exceptional care is provided at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and its affiliated sites of care. Committed to a strategy of continued innovation and quality enhancement, the Director will build and shape the Division's cardiology clinical activities into a unified and integrated model of care across Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and its affiliated sites of care, including 7 multidisciplinary outpatient centers, serving the greater Philadelphia region and southern New Jersey.

In 2023, the Division's clinical team of 130 full-time providers performed over 41,000 outpatient visits and cared for over 1,500 patients admitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), Jefferson's flagship 884-bed quaternary care hospital. As a major teaching hospital, Level I Trauma Center, and transplant center located on the University's 13-acre campus in Center City, Philadelphia, TJUH ensures a diverse and complex patient and procedure mix, with one of highest Case Mix Indexes (CMI) in the tri-state area.

Jefferson's brand new 19-story outpatient center, the Honickman Center, serves as the hub for the Division's clinical activity and outpatient teaching. Level 9, which is dedicated to Cardiology and Heart & Vascular clinical services, is the new location of TJUH's main cardiac outpatient imaging center and the primary practice site for the Division's 39 full-time Jefferson University Physicians, the Medical College's faculty practice plan.

The Division is actively involved in research with over $7 million in direct research funding and a clinical trials program currently with 16 cardiac trials open to enrollment. Interdisciplinary research is performed in collaboration with other programs, including the Departments of Surgery and Radiology, the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, and faculty from the Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research, as well as the Center for Translational Medicine, where 6 of its faculty are focused on advancing translational and basic cardiovascular research.

Division faculty provide direct teaching and supervision of ACGME accredited programs in cardiovascular disease, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, advanced heart failure and transplantation, and interventional cardiology, which also offers non-ACGME advanced training in structural heart and peripheral vascular disease. The Division also offers ACGME advanced critical care cardiology training for 1-2 fellows administered jointly with the Division of Pulmonary Medicine.

The successful candidate will:

* With a patient-centric focus and shared sense of accountability for improving patient outcomes, engage and drive collaborative efforts to create an integrated, patient-centered model of care for both the Division and the Jefferson Cardiovascular Institute.

* Work with leadership to develop a compelling vision and strategic business plan for the Cardiovascular Institute to advance the evolution and growth of cardiac care at Jefferson. Conduct a top-to-bottom review of enterprise-wide cardiology clinical activities, staffing, and workflows with an eye toward creating an enterprise-wide model of cardiac care that integrates with cardiovascular surgery, intensive care, heart and lung transplant, and diagnostic services. Serve as the key operations leader of the Cardiovascular Institute to drive physician recruitment, standardization of care, integration, and research.

* Promote the Division of Cardiology as a core component of the Jefferson Cardiovascular Institute and Cardiovascular service line to advance multidisciplinary team-based approaches to care. Participate in direct patient care.

* Transform the Division's clinical activities into a cohesive and integrated multispecialty group practice. Facilitate continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and delivery of care. Align the Division's academic and private practice cardiologists around patient care standards across all care settings, including outpatient procedures, to ensure quality and consistent patient outcomes. Advance clinical integration in ways aligned with Jefferson's academic mission of becoming a fully integrated academic health system.

* Strengthen and expand innovative clinical programs and research assuring the Division's reputation for excellence and its ability to attract top talent in the recruitment of its faculty and trainees. Drive discovery through clinical trials, foster interdisciplinary research collaborations, and guide the seamless integration of research findings into patient care.

* Support the Division's professional growth, development, and well-being, including leadership development of faculty and research development of cardiology fellows and early-career faculty through one-on-one mentorships.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a demonstrated ability to collaboratively lead a multi-faceted clinical, research, and educational enterprise across a matrixed health system with shared decision-making.
  • Have demonstrated success building trusted relationships outside of Cardiology with key departments and institutional leaders and leading strategic initiatives to advance the integration of care delivery and expand academic-clinical programs in strategic ways, e.g., leverage clinical footprint to expand clinical trial enrollment.
