Salary range: The salary range for this Assistant Professor position is $90,000-$105,000. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. (See Faculty-Ladder Ranks-Professor Series) “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position Description

The Department of Literature (https://literature.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Global Anglophone Literature, 1750 - 2000. We seek a scholar specializing in English-language literatures, comprising England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, in addition to Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and anglophone literatures of Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia. Potential research areas include British literature in a global context, postcolonial studies, comparative racializations, genre theory, gender and sexuality studies, diaspora and migration studies, and ecocritical and world literature. The successful candidate will demonstrate research and teaching interests in more than one literary and/or linguistic tradition. The appointee will be expected to teach large undergraduate lecture courses as well as small advanced seminars on the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to advise and mentor graduate students. The position carries a five-course-equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying out other academic and professional service responsibilities.

We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Candidates must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in Literature or related field of study at time of application; record of research and scholarly productivity, including a book or comparable project in progress; and evidence of teaching at the university level.
