GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of the Facilities manager to perform the skilled operation of powered grounds equipment, including mowers, tractors, trucks and trailers; to perform grounds maintenance work; and to perform related work as required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plants and cultivates trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Sprays for control of insects, weeds, and plant di
  • Mixes and applies chemicals used for weed control
  • Applies fertilizer as needed. Spades and otherwise prepares grounds for planting.
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, hedges, and trees. Hoes weeds and rakes lawn.
  • Operates power riding lawn mowers, sweepers, sprayers, trucks, tractors, chain saws, power edgers and other motorized equipment.
  • Uses tractor attachments as the job demands
  • Hauls dirt, trash, and other materials
  • Maintains grounds equipment and vehicles in a safe operating condition.
  • Performs general grounds clean-up including picking up paper and trash on grounds

Areas as well as emptying all trash containers around the campus.

  • Performs building maintenance and cleaning duties.
  • Transports equipment as required using trucks and trailers sufficient to complete
    assigned task.
  • Off season, and rainy days will be required to do site maintenance work as needed or required by the Manager.
  • May perform duties at sites not permanently assigned to.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid and appropriate Louisiana Driver's License. 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Operation, use and maintenance of powered grounds equipment, tractors and attachments;
  • Methods, materials and tools used in grounds keeping work;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedure
  • Perform grounds equipment operation work, including the operation of tractors, trucks, power gang mowers and attachments;
  • Perform general grounds keeping work;
  • Use herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in an appropriate and safe manner;
  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course
    of work.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the
knowledge and abilities stated above and the ability to perform the duties of the position. A
typical qualifying entrance background is working-level experience performing grounds
keeping and mower operation work;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include:

  1. Employee lifts/carries 40 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time).
  2. Employee lifts/carries 20 pounds constantly (67-100% of the time).
  3. Employee's position requires pushing a maximum force of 36 pounds on objects.

Mobility:

  • Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, squat, kneel, climb ladders,
    reach and bend.

Other Conditions:

  • Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection
    from sun, cold and rain
  • Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel, including goggles, face
    protectors.
