Work directly with a wide variety of animals. May occasionally, lift/push/pull objects up to 50 pounds and work in confined spaces.

Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm with additional duties on weekends, holidays, etc. as required.

Job Summary

The University of Kentucky is seeking dynamic candidates for our Attending Veterinarian position. UK has a diverse and decentralized animal care and use program serving educators and researchers in the College of Agriculture, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the five colleges of the UK Medical Center. The Attending Veterinarian (AV) reports directly to the Vice President for Research and serves as the lead veterinarian responsible for oversite of all animals used in research, teaching, and testing at the University of Kentucky. The AV works with the DLAR, Office of Research Integrity, and other administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure that all animals receive adequate veterinary care and that other components of the animal care programs are appropriate and compliant. In addition, the AV serves as a permanent member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC).

Qualified candidates will be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or eligible to be licensed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky within six months of hire. In addition, candidates must have Category II Accreditation from the National Veterinary Accreditation Program of the USDA or are eligible to obtain accreditation within six months of hire. The successful candidate should possess experience overseeing and managing research animal care program and preferably experience with agricultural and/or exotic animals.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or eligible to be licensed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky within six months of hire is required.

Category II Accreditation from the National Veterinary Accreditation Program of the USDA or are eligible to obtain accreditation within six months of hire is required.

Software experience with Word, Excel, MS Windows. Ability to analyze information and make decisions using sound judgement.

Preferred Education/Experience

Relevant veterinary specialty board certification ( ACLAM, ACVS, ACVIM, ACVP). Experience overseeing and managing research animal care program. Agricultural and/or exotic animal experience.
