Laboratory Technician



The Kwiatkowski Lab in the Department of Cell Biology is seeking a research technician to conduct research experiments and manage daily lab operations. Work in the Kwiatkowski Lab seeks a mechanistic understanding of cell adhesion in heart muscle cells using a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, proteomics, and microscopy. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, analytical, organized, self-motivated, and interacts well with others. Recent or soon-to-be graduates with a passion for biomedical research and plans to apply to either graduate school or medical school are especially encouraged to apply. Duties will include ordering and organizing lab supplies, preparing media and reagents, managing lab databases, molecular cloning, primary cell culture, and fluorescent microscopy data acquisition and analysis. Individual will work closely with the P.I. to manage the lab and will be encouraged to develop and conduct an independent research project. Knowledge of molecular biology is required. Experience with mammalian cell culture is strongly preferred. Experience with microscopy imaging and analysis is preferred but not required. B.S. or B.A. in biology or science-related field required.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions

The candidate must possess knowledge of biological and chemical reactions for their own safety and the safety of others. The candidate must be able to lift, carry and mix potentially hazardous material without assistance. The candidate must be able to recognize and respond to dangerous situations in the lab.


Physical Effort

Standing, walking and sitting within the lab are required. The candidate must be able to lift containers and equipment in excess of 25 pounds on a weekly basis, and push or move equipment > 50 pounds occasionally.
