Research Specialist



Will work on a variety of projects involving radiation biology of cells in culture and small animals under the direct supervision of laboratory director.Technical Skills Include:Western Blot, DNA sequencing, RNA and DNA isolation, rt-PCR, protein, RNA, DNA quantitation, Luminex Assay for protein quantitation, RNAseq, growth of cells in culture, and cytokine arrays. Experience with intravenous, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous injection of cells, drugs, and pharmaceuticals into small animals (primarily mice). Preparation of tissues and organs from small animals for histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Experience in growing bacteria in defined medium/broth and measurement of growth by optical density and colony formation; preparation of data for statistical analysis using appropriate computer software for bar graphs and line graphs. Presentation of data to faculty supervisor. Attendance of all laboratory meetings and presentation of data and reports. Experience using small animal irradiator for delivery of ionizing irradiation to mice preferred.Requirements:The ideal candidate will have two or more years of relevant experience in research involving cell culture and animal models. Experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, and techniques used in basic science research is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions

Tissue culture techniques. Work with mice including breeding and autopsy of mice. Isolate DNA, RNA, and protein from cells grown in vitro or tissue samples from mice. Analyze cells by Flow Cytometry.


Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
