Teaching Assistant Professor - Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh (Oakland campus) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor position, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024. This position is on an 8-month basis, is outside of the tenure stream, and will require administrative and budgetary approval. Minimum qualifications: Applicants should have earned a minimum of a doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited university and have at least 5 years of university-level teaching experience.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with teaching large-enrollment university-level general chemistry courses; teaching and developing general chemistry and advanced chemistry labs including inorganic and bioorganic chemistry labs; experience incorporating undergraduates at multitiered levels in the teaching of large-enrollment courses; experience with training and mentoring graduate TAs.

Job description: The normal teaching duties will consist of teaching 18 credit hours over the academic year. In the Chemistry department, this level of teaching load typically corresponds to 4 large enrollment courses, or 6 low enrollment courses, or 8 lab sections. With the department’s permission, credit on a course-equivalent basis can be applied toward this total for student advising and other non-teaching activities. In addition to teaching, the candidate will also have curriculum development duties and will coordinate the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program in the chemistry department. Typical duties include recruiting, training, mentoring, and assessment. The candidate will also serve as an academic advisor for Chemistry Majors and on departmental and university committees.
