Technical Systems Designer



The University Center for Teaching and Learning is seeking a Technical Systems Designer to join our Learning Space Development team. The Technical Systems Designer serves as a leader in the creation of effective and accessible learning spaces that advance teaching excellence at the University of Pittsburgh. The position is responsible for managing high-level classroom renovation projects that produce effective and accessible learning spaces that actively engage students and instructors. The incumbent works closely with faculty, deans, directors, administrators, and external contractors to drive the development of effective learning spaces at Pitt. The incumbent will advocate for the effective implementation of current and emerging technologies that align with good pedagogy. Applicants must have thorough knowledge of, and experience with, AV control systems, computer networking, and project management. Superb communications skills are essential as is extensive experience fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders with diverse interests. All work must demonstrate a strong design aesthetic and align with University policies and goals.

Essential activities include design and development of technical schematic drawings, capital project management, recommending policy and procedure, exploring and testing new and emerging technologies, listening to the needs of clients, collaborating with key stakeholders, and developing project plans.

The job consists of broad responsibilities. Often, the incumbent must forge new pathways that challenge conventional thinking and practice. Doing so requires the application of significant analysis and judgment. The incumbent must be willing to take informed risks and learn from occasional failure. Activities must align with the goals of the Teaching Center and with the strategic initiatives of the University of Pittsburgh.

This is a hybrid position that primarily works on campus but will have opportunities for remote work. Working hours are generally from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday but may vary and may occasionally exceed 37.5 hours per week.

Job Summary

Plans, manages, and supervises the design, installation, development, and maintenance of instructional technology/mediated classrooms and interactive television facilities across all University campuses. Manages video and audio recording facility installations as well as construction and renovation projects.

  • Participate in hiring process, recommend candidates for hire
  • Provide classroom technology services and respond to help tickets

  • Explore new technologies, processes, and methods

Physical Effort

Requires extensive mobility on campus to make site visits, meet with clients, and climb ladders and scaffolds. Some lifting of equipment and materials is required, usually not exceeding 50 lbs. Incumbent will primarily work on campus. However, there is potential to occasionally work remotely through prior arrangement with the manager.
