The Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology to begin in August 2024.

We seek an anthropologist to teach sections of introductory biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, human osteology, and upper-level undergraduate courses based on the candidate’s area of specialization. The selected candidate will teach a 3/3 load (with the possibility of additional summer courses) and must have experience developing and implementing NAGPRA policies at an institutional level. This is a permanent, full-time position on the tenure-track. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to partner with interdisciplinary programs across campus and be a part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary department.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess the following requirements:
  • A PhD in Anthropology is required.
  • A clear research agenda, as evidenced by publications, planned research, fieldwork, or grants in bioarcheology or forensic anthropology is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated ability to combine pedagogical innovation into a research agenda.
  • Demonstrated experience in biological anthropology and forensic anthropology. Preference will be given to qualified applicants who also have professional forensic or applied bioarchaeological experience.
  • Must be able to teach forensic anthropology and a range of topics related to biological anthropology Preference will be given to individuals with existing experience teaching courses on these topics: biological anthropology, bioarchaeology, paleopathology, burial practices, crime scene investigation, forensic anthropology, and human osteology.
  • UTC will be implementing a new undergraduate certificate program in forensic anthropology in Fall, 2024. Preference will be given to candidates who can actively contribute to the forensic certificate program, as well as those with experience in pedagogical innovation or curriculum development relevant to such a program.
  • Geographic area of expertise should align with existing areas of expertise in the Anthropology department, including the Southeast United States or Europe.
  • A clear commitment to research ethics is required.
  • Experience with NAGPRA is required. The land upon which the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga is built is part of the traditional territory of the Tsalagi peoples (now Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians), Tsoyahá peoples (Yuchi, Muscogee Creek), and Shawnee peoples. Preference will be given to candidates with training, certification, and demonstrated involvement with NAGPRA.
  • Familiarity with tribal consultation is required. Experience with tribal consultation with tribes in the Southeast United States is preferred.
  • Demonstrated potential to teach in a variety of instructional modalities, including lab-based, online, face-to-face, and hybrid courses. Preference will be given to applicants with experience utilizing High Impact Educational Practices (HIEP), including active and experiential learning.
  • Willingness to engage in assisting the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional goals as specified in UTC’s Strategic Plan.

  • Evidence of research agenda (e.g., a two-page document outlining research relevant to aforementioned preferences).

The Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies (SCJS), within the College of Arts and Sciences, offers B.A. or B.S. degrees in Anthropology, a minor in Geography, a B.S. in Sociology, and a B.S. in Criminal Justice (including an online B.S. program). The department also offers a graduate program (M.S.) in Criminal Justice.
