Description
The School of Interior Architecture invites applications for the 2024 Interior Architecture Tenure-track-full-time; the nine-month position will be awarded based on experience and promise of excellence to a candidate with focus or established evidence in teaching and research or creative activity. The appointment will be an Assistant or Associate Professor in the School of Interior Architecture at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, College of Architecture and Design. The position begins August 1, 2024, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. We seek a collaborative candidate with innovative research or creative activity with progressive teaching agendas in interior architecture. The ability to teach in a design studio and experience with digital technologies is required. Current areas of interest in the school are:
Integrated technologies (e.g., interactive media, intelligent design, etc.); building systems (e.g., materials, furniture, lighting, acoustics, etc.); computer-aided construction technologies and graphic representation (e.g. Revit, Rhino, Maya, Blender, Unity, etc.); digital fabrication and robotics; healthcare and wellness; evidence-based design; universal design; workplace strategies; and sustainability. Candidates with areas of interest not listed above are encouraged to apply.

About the School of Interior Architecture
The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture within a highly competitive professional program, attracting over 600 first-year applicants across the United States in 2023. There are approximately 45 students in each cohort year, with the total number of students in the program equaling about 192. The school is located in the College of Architecture and Design with the School of Architecture, School of Landscape Architecture, and School of Design; we share the building with the School of Art. The position offers rich opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration. The school is distinguished with recent national and international student and faculty awards, including Highly Commended in the International 2017 Undergraduate Awards and four consecutive years of students placing first and second in the national Gensler Scholarship. The Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accredited the program. DesignIntelligence ranked the school 11th “Most hired from” among comparable universities.
About the Tenure-Track Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant or Associate Professor rank is a full-time, tenure-track appointment. The candidate will demonstrate a combined contribution of teaching, creative activity/research, and service. Creative activity or research will demonstrate a method that broadens the discipline of Interior Architecture. Research/creative activities will be incorporated into instructional assignments, allowing undergraduate students to learn from advanced research or creative methods. A typical instructional assignment is a studio and a lecture/seminar teaching a semester in all undergraduate interior architecture curriculum levels. Reduced teaching for two semesters of only 3 credit hours of instruction may be provided during the tenure-track period.

Designers and academics from various allied design professions and disciplines who are interested in operating in an educational capacity and can demonstrate significant engagement with interior architecture are encouraged to apply. Qualifications
Required Qualifications for Associate Professor
- Demonstrated success with established research or creative activity on the national level or significant recognition in professional practice including national awards or equivalent distinguished work.
- Terminal degree in your field of study
- At least one degree in interior architecture, interior design, architecture, or related discipline
- The ability to instruct undergraduate interior architecture studios.
- And instructional integration and competency of digital and analog skills in the design studio/classroom
- A commitment to developing progressive teaching strategies and advancing pedagogical methods to meet learners with empathy and standards of excellence.
- Ability to contribute to a collegial and collaborative working environment.
- Commitment to incorporate into their research and teaching equity and inclusion.
- Degrees in multiple disciplines
- Passed NCIDQ or qualify and pass the NCIDQ within the first two years of the position.
- Demonstrated peer-reviewed research, competition awards, or design awards.
- Demonstrated success teaching design studios.
- Studio-based master's degree or equivalent significant contributions to design practice
- Professional experience in an architecture office or design firm
