JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Clinical Dental Assistant provides chairside assistance and clinical practice support for faculty, residents, and dental students in the Pediatric Dentistry department, which operates clinics in the College of Dentistry and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide chairside assistance for faculty, residents, and dental students (oral evacuation, retraction, and instrument exchange) under nitrous oxide, moderate and deep sedation, and in the operating room.
  2. Ensures that working area, instruments and equipment meet OSHA sterilization regulations.
  3. Prepare clinical space for treatment (infection control, isolation of the oral cavity, instrument, and material setup).
  4. Prepares treatment materials per manufacturer recommendations (alginate, restorative materials, adhesives, etc.)
  5. Monitors and maintains the safety of nitrous oxide usage.
  6. Exposes radiographs, performs dental prophylaxis, and applies fluoride on patients. Maintains necessary inventory supplies and equipment.
  7. Prepares and maintains medical consultations on patients; makes and reviews patient appointments.
  8. Cleans and disinfects working area and clinical work surfaces; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and nitrous oxide masks.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience working in a dental office or dental laboratory Must maintain registration as a licensed dental assistant in the State of Tennessee. Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Radiology Certification required. CPR Certification. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED). (Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) with the Dental Assistant National Board Certification (DANB) is preferred. Graduate of CODA accredited school preferred.)

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring is required. CDA (DANB) certification preferred. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of all areas of dental assisting as outlined by the State of Tennessee Board of Dentistry.
  • Knowledge of dental regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides all supportive services or procedures necessary to protect the physical well-being of the patient.
  • Excellent patient care and customer service skills
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and some holidays.
