Senior Radiation Safety Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Radiation Safety Specialist assists in the implementation and management of specific programs within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s radiation safety program. This position will work collaboratively with researchers, faculty, and staff to manage and implement the university’s radiation safety committee. This position will assess the necessary campus permissions or university licensing that may be needed to execute research projects that are proposed for committee review. This position will provide radiation safety training to the campus community through both in-person and online training platforms. This position is responsible for managing compliance documentation for the radiation safety programs including electronic and paper records, writing compliance reports and operational procedures, and coordinate the development of systems improvements in the radiation safety programs. This position will provide some operational support for routine operations which include package receipts, lab audits, radiation surveys, occupational dose monitoring tasks, or other tasks to support the compliance program activities. This position also shares occasional 24-hour EH&S one call technical/emergency support coverage as assigned.


Qualifications :

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Required Education and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree.

· Minimum of 5 years work experience in safety or safety program implementation, environmental compliance, laboratory safety, or regulatory compliance program support.

· Minimum 2 years of total experience in health physics or radiation safety programs.

Minimum Required Skills and Abilities

· Must have a valid driver’s license and be a U.S. citizen.

· Must have ability to perform physical aspects of the job including lifting, carrying, and stooping.

· Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.

· Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to obtain information, explain procedures and situations, and persuade others to address compliance related deficiencies or regulatory requirements.

· Ability to work independently and follow through on work assignments with minimal direction or as a team member to reach desired outcome.

· Knowledge of, or ability to learn applicable regulations, guidance documents, and institutional policies and apply these standards to provide guidance on research safety taking into consideration factors such as regulatory scope, hazards, and best management practices.



Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Experiences

Preferred greater than 2 years of work experience in health physics and/or a radiation safety program. Preferred work experience in implementing safety or compliance programs. Preferred work experience in higher education or research environments. Preferred experience in developing and delivery of training programs or other adult learning activities. Preferred skills and ability to develop operational improvements through available software programs. Preferred ability to manage and organize a large amount of technical information in a reliable system.
