Student Success Coach - Digital Learning at UT

Digital Learning at UT is a newly created unit charged with advancing UT’s commitment to discovery, creativity, learning, and engagement, specifically for online learners. Using advanced and innovative technologies, Digital Learning at UT will provide scalable solutions that enhance the online learning experience and reduce barriers to student access and success, providing a tremendous impact to online learners across the state and the nation. Reporting to the Senior Assistant Director Student Success, the Student Success Coach provides proactive and intentional academic support to UT online undergraduate and graduate students. The success coach builds meaningful relationships with students with a focus on goal setting, overcoming obstacles and achieving success. The Success Coach builds working relationships with academic and administrative units and advising teams across UTK and ensures students have access to necessary resources and tools. This position has the possibility of working remotely. Multiple positions being hired into this role.


Qualifications :

Job Duties:
  • Engages in proactive outreach to empower students through positive reinforcement, building rapport and establishing meaningful academic relationships.
  • Utilizes strong coaching skills to encourage and motivate students towards their academic goals through time management, goal setting, study skills, learning strategies, resource referrals, etc.
  • Identifies student patterns and assists with implementing proactive interventions and processes.
  • Provides high-quality, student-centered support using text, email, phone and chat of a significant volume in a fast-paced environment.
  • Develops and uses extensive knowledge of UTK policies (academic and others) to help students navigate academic choices and improve student persistence
  • Works to build student knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs that support success
  • Monitors student engagement via dashboards and implements interventions as prescribed
  • Employs case-management and other academic software to document coaching sessions and communication with students
  • Assists in new student on-boarding to include online orientation as well as conducting welcome outreach
  • Participates in recruitment activities and student retention initiatives including attending virtual open house events, information sessions, webinars, and other events as requested to offer guidance to new and returning students
  • Builds working relationships with academic and administrative units and advising teams across UTK and ensures students have access to necessary resources and tools.
  • Utilizes resources and critical thinking skills to problem solve, quickly make decisions, and provide the best experience to online students at UT.
  • Works both independently and as part of a team
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge Microsoft Office Suite
  • Thorough knowledge to resolve issues and problems; identifies trends and recommends alternative solutions to resolve problems
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, understandable manner, and listen attentively to others
  • Skill in organization and ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally
  • Ability to rapidly adapt and effectively utilize new technology, practices, policies and methods
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration and other stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population
  • Ability to recognize critical situations and act on them in compliance with university policies and procedures
  • Ability to manage time and schedule to meet department goals
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Approximately a breadth and depth of one (1) year experience in one or more of the following: academic coaching, advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree
  • Prefer 2+ years’ experience in academic coaching, advising, student retention or related student services area. Experience in learning strategies, academic intervention, and support
  • Experience working with multicultural students and students with diverse backgrounds
