Deployment of innovation in healthcare nearly always uses the bench-to-business-to-bedside path for translation. The Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin is recruiting a top leader to integrate medical innovation and entrepreneurship in ongoing education, research and clinical activities. This individual will report directly to the Associate Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and will be critical in developing and implementing new programs, activities and educational initiatives in DellMed. In addition, this position will be critical to success as DellMed expands with two new clinics in development, an Adult Specialty hospital and a Cancer hospital in conjunction with UT MD Anderson.

Specific responsibilities will include: working within DellMed to develop and successfully implement medical innovation and entrepreneurship programs including ecosystem development activities, novel team formation, executing and refining interdisciplinary programs such as NEXXUS with pharmacy and business schools, and fostering lean startup for life science cohorts in conjunction with UT ICorps.

Qualifications

  • Ph. D., M.D. or related scientific or medical degree
  • Deep experience in teaching the Lean Startup for Life Sciences model of invention/business de-risking. Learners should include experience working with undergraduate, graduate, staff, faculty, medical and health care professionals.
  • Experience in maintaining active, project-learning educational pedagogy while fitting within traditional academic educational and medical professional accreditation. Examples of new course development including detailed syllabi and educational outcomes will be essential.
  • Experience in developing and fostering an innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem including team formation and pitch competitions, including practical experience handling IP disclosures (internal and external).
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration skills are essential. Demonstrated ability to communicate and successful partner with a variety of individuals, including health care professionals, engineering, scientific, legal, and corporate perspectives. Such communication includes key components from working in a comprehensive environment.
  • Successful leadership of a team in a dynamic context is required with change management skills expected and celebrated.
  • Mentoring and advising experience for learners from a range of backgrounds will be required.
  • Experience establishing innovation and entrepreneurship metrics within educational and clinical environments.
  • Familiarity with major regulatory paths in healthcare for diagnostics and therapeutics is essential.
  • Key personal competencies include adaptability and commitment to a lifelong-learning professional development path for both personal as well as fellow team members.

Additional desired competencies:
  • Experience obtaining external funding for programmatic activities in medical innovation and entrepreneurship including federal and governmental sources.
  • Demonstration of successful delivery of medical innovation and entrepreneurship educational activities despite geographical differences is also highly valued.
