Job Summary

The Division of Pediatric Neurology has an immediate opening for a Medical Assistant – Complex Epilepsy. The role is administrative with care coordination oversight. The position is responsible for the tracking and coordination of patient care under the preview of the care team in a multidisciplinary clinical setting. Works with various care teams and services to ensure the best possible treatment and outcome for patients. Coordinates necessary patient care services with physicians, nurses, lab, radiology, pharmacy, clinics, outside referrals, etc. Additional responsibilities include assistance with care teams to maintain credentialing, CME/ MOC credit, scheduling and transcribing various meetings, etc.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

· Managing and filling out patient requested forms such as FMLA, school plans, letters.

· Manage meeting agendas and invites.

· Track and manage Epileptologist licensing.

· Manage message pool.

· Act as patient liaison to help navigate the medical system.

· Propose medication refill orders, call pharmacies as needed.

· Participate in medical testing coordination, preauth, and scheduling as needed.

· Facilitate communication and correspondence across interdisciplinary team.

· Post clinic telephone follow-up with patients.

· Communicate normal lab/testing results to patient.

· Review medications with patients, as needed.

· Coordinate with clinic nurses to manage patient tracking systems for specialty patient groups such as ketogenic diet, genetics, tuber sclerosis, RNS, infantile spasms, etc.

· Mentor, coach, and participate in quality improvement/evidence-based projects.

· This role is not a clinic role and time in clinic will be limited based on need.

· Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic's specialty skills within six weeks of hire. *Specialty skills may not be performed until after the new hire completed basic competency testing.

· Ability to withstand the physical demand of being on your feet for long periods of time, of moving and lifting patients and of reaching for and handling equipment.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients. Incumbents face exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Preferred
Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

· Experience in pediatrics, neurology, multidisciplinary clinics or working with high-acuity, complex patients.

· Administrative experience.

· Experience using Excel.

· Experience using Redcap.
