Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Wellbeing is responsible for identifying, operationalizing, and advocating for goals that facilitate wellbeing and equitable access to wellbeing resources within and across interrelated levels of Wake Forest's campus culture including individual, interpersonal, community, and environmental elements. Using a collective impact model, the Assistant Director supports the creation of a broad, coherent framework for health promotion that encompasses harm reduction and mitigation and elevates wellbeing and access to wellbeing resources across campus. The Assistant Director plays a visible role creating, assessing, identifying, and proposing innovative plans to address campus health trends and priorities, grounded in evidence-based practice and theories of health education, promotion, and equity. The Assistant Director works to amplify Wake Forest's strengths while reducing personal, campus, and community barriers to health and wellbeing practices and resources. Topical areas of focus include equitable access to wellbeing practices and resources specific to mental health, body acceptance and positivity, and other relevant topics as needed.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees a multi-issue training and education portfolio to include mental health promotion, body acceptance and positivity, and other topics as relevant.
  • Manages and advises peer education groups focusing on promoting mental health and body acceptance and positivity.
  • Collaborates with all campus constituents to make the campus healthier and safer by connecting students to information and resources supportive to mental health, body acceptance and positivity, and resilience and by cultivating attitudes and behaviors that foster a culture which values and supports community wellbeing.
  • Implements sustainable mental health equity strategies and programs to include development of innovative systems, methods, and practical interventions to promote mental health equity for marginalized groups.
  • Implements sustainable body equity strategies and programs to include development of innovative systems, methods, and practical interventions to promote body equity for marginalized groups.
  • Partners with Health & Wellbeing department colleagues using a collective impact model to facilitate comprehensive wellbeing for the campus community. Develops structural and policy-level interventions that positively influence environmental determinants of wellbeing. Develops, implements, coordinates and assesses mental health education initiatives for the campus community based on sound theory and evidenced-informed practice of college health promotion.
  • Participates in departmental and institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, coalitions and practitioners' roundtables; ensures the delivery of culturally competent care for a diverse student body.
Other Functions:
  • Participates in other campus life activities search committees, planning committees, task forces, and other working groups
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Promotion or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and the development of multicultural competencies.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate student staff or peer educators.
  • Excellent and demonstrated public speaking; group facilitation; writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Experience in program development, social marketing, and evaluation. Knowledgeable in health topics relevant to college students, including but not limited to: mental health, resilience, alcohol and other drug use and abuse prevention, eating disorders, body image mental health, healthy interpersonal relationships, sexuality, sexual health, stress, and sleep.
  • Must be detail-oriented; possesses strong organizational and follow-up skills. Evidence of ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students.
  • Strong computer skills and an ability to learn technology quickly. Proficient in a variety of computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and statistical software).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekend and after hours programming based on student needs.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Certified in Public Health (CPH) or eligible and intent to become certified.
  • Certified Mindfulness for Emerging Adults Institute mindfulness teacher or eligible and intent to become certified.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation specific to mental health and resilience in a college student population.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation specific to topics of body equity, Health at Every Size, body neutrality, body positivity, joyful movement, or similar topical areas in a college student population.
  • Experience in college health promotion, knowledge of health promotion theory and evidence-informed practice, and ability to translate and apply that theory within a university population.
  • Sound understanding of health needs and interests and ability to design health promotion initiatives that reflect and encompass the diversity of the Wake Forest student body.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments, and program evaluations to strategically guide policy, programmatic, and budget decisions.
  • Knowledge and application of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and experience using environmental management strategies and the socio-ecological model.
  • Demonstrated record of campus culture change with three to five years of experience with college age population.
Accountabilities:
  • Supervise Graduate student assistant(s)/interns and student staff.
  • Supervise, hire, train, provide work direction and problem-solving assistance for paid and volunteer peer educators.
  • Assures compliance with applicable regulations and professional standards.
  • Provides supervision for the prevention activities of Graduate Assistant(s) and/or student employees.
Physical Requirements:
  • Communication with others to exchange information.
  • Repeated motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Environmental Conditions:
  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
