OBJECTIVE:
Maintenance Trainee/Worker I/II/IIT will work under direct supervision and report to the Maintenance Supervisor and/or the Leadman performing basic/advanced maintenance duties in the drinking water and sewer collections systems.

DUTIES:
Maintenance Trainee/Worker /II/ITT will work in the safe repair and installation of water leaks, meter installation/repairs/reads, hydrant and valve maintenance, sewer flushing and lift station maintenance. Work safely and productively with cement, asphalt, base rock and backfill. Perform traffic control duties. Learn basic carpentry, mechanics, painting and plumbing. Be available to respond to the District within 45 minutes. Inspect and maintain sewer lift stations for proper operation, bypass or shutdown of equipment in emergency situation while on night and/or weekend standby. Operate high-powered mechanical equipment used to clean sewer lines: hydrostatic cleaner, backhoe, air compressor and related tools and equipment. Maintain the water distribution systems, which includes distribution lines, all valves, fire hydrants, sample sites and meters. Required to turn on and off individual connections as requested by the customer or office through the Supervisor, Lead man or District Office. Connect and disconnect services, install new lines, repair or replace valves, lines and meters on a routine or emergency basis. Inspect all well sites to ensure that buildings and sites are secure and in good working order. Clean buildings and areas as scheduled by the Supervisor or Lead man. Work is commonly outside: will be exposed to high and low temperatures, rain, fog, dust, high winds etc. Perform safe handling of chlorine drums. Work around disagreeable odors and working safely with all types of small equipment. Exposure to hazards such as moving equipment, traffic, trench work, human waste and confined space. Frequently dig with a shovel, bending stooping, walking, moderate to heavy lifting (up to 100 Ibs.), climbing up and down stairs and/or ladders. Required to work in confined spaces, work on pipes and valves that are submerged under water
and/or wastewater. Subject to standby duty, weekend duty, holiday duty and emergencies. Safely operate Utility truck and operate Dump truck, Backhoe and Jet truck.

REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of basic tools and equipment. Have the ability to operate all District equipment safely and properly. Must-work closely with other maintenance workers, Maintenance Supervisor, Lead man and District Office personnel. Follow work orders provided by the Supervisor or Lead man on installation of service lines and meters; know layout of District lines and lift stations; become familiar with District layout in all service areas and/or boundaries within the District. Attend training classes to achieve a higher degree of knowledge as required by the Department of Health Services in Distribution System Certification. Study and achieve Sewer Certification to level required by the Board of Directors.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license 
  • 18 months to obtain a Water Distribution I Certificate.
  • 18 months to obtain CWEA collection I certificate
  • Will be required to obtain a Class B drivers license with required endorsements within 18 months of employment with the District. Will not be able to operate Jet truck until after obtaining Class B license. CDL schooling and license, paid for by the District, will require that a signed contract be entered into by the incumbent and the District stating that the employee will maintain employment for 3 years minimum or will repay the District for the schooling.
  • Reliable transportation to work. Provide DMV printout and proof of insurance
  • Required to become fully immunized for Hepatitis and to show proof of tetanus shot within 7 years or get a booster. District will pay fees.
  • All new employees will be sent to District’s doctor for full physical and drug screening. There will be a full background check, including fingerprints. District will pay fees.
  • Must have a high school diploma
  • Trainee requires no experience, M1 requires 1 year experience with required certifications, M2 requires 2 years experience with required certifications, M3 requires 3 years with required certifications.
